The Education of Henry Adams - An Autobiography Illustrated with gravures by Samuel Chamberlain. Introduction by Henry Seidel Canby, Adams, Henry
1 Adams, Henry The Education of Henry Adams - An Autobiography Illustrated with gravures by Samuel Chamberlain. Introduction by Henry Seidel Canby
New York The Heritage Press 1970 Hardcover Near Fine Small 4to
Fine in Near Fine slipcase. Publisher's brown and beige boards with a swirl-marbled pattern, backed with tan cloth, with gilt title stamped (horizontally) at the top of the spine, top edges decoratively stained. Title page printed in black and red. A fine copy of the book -- clean and tight, with no markings of any sort. The brown slipcase is similarly clean and well-preserved. The copyright date of 1942 derives from the Limited Editions Club version, in which this design was first used. This Heritage Press edition is later than that, but earlier than 1970, when the Heritage Press issued a edition of this text with a completely different binding design, with the title lettered verically down the whole spine.

New York; Boston Henry Holt; F.W. Christern; Schoenhof 1873 Hardcover Very Good- 8vo
80 pages; Publisher's grey paper-covered boards, with brown cloth spine -- title and illustration on front cover, ads for French books from Henry Holt on the rear cover. Rubbing to the edges of the covers, wear to the spine, particularly at the hinges and edges, and a few very short tears without loss to a couple of text leaves. Neat Christmas inscription in ink on the front free-endpaper dated 1889. This charming American edition of the Mother Goose tales is entirely in French, with b/w wood-engraved illustrations by Ludwig Richter [1803-1884] and Franz, Graf von Pocci [1807-1876]. It appears that there were at least three issues, which can be chronologically arranged by differences in the names of the publication firms. We suggest, tentatively, the following order: 1. New York: Leypold & Holt, S. R. Urbino [see the copy Hutchins Library - Special Collections, Berea College, Kentucky] 2. New York : Holt & Williams, F.W. Chistern ; Boston : S.R. Urbino [see the copy in The Mary Faulk Markiewicz Collection of Children's Books; Rhees Rare Books accession no.: RB-12383 -- University of Rochester; also the Cotsen Childrens Library at Princeton]; and 3. New York: Henry Holt and Company : F.W. Christern ; Boston : Schoenhof. (Such as the copy offered here). By 1870, Frederick Leypold pulled back from his partnership with Henry Holt (more or less to head "Publisher's Weekly"). Between about 1864 and 1870, the Boston firm of S. R. Urbino - a specialist in foreign literature, was gradually acquired by De Vries, Ibarra & Co. After the death of G.H. De Vries in 1870, the firm then was acquired by Carl Schoenhof, one of the firm's employees. Henry James was a fan of Schoenhof & Moeller's Boston establishment, describing it in 1878 as "a vastly better shop than any of the kind in London." Our best guess is that this copy dates from some time between 1873-1880. There are four pages of "Airs" in musical notation on pp. 77-80. The ads on the rear cover of the binding are "Works for the Study of French" from Henry Holt & Co.

Nacht en Morgen en andere verhalen Door den hoofdredacteur van "De vriend van oud en jong", Anonymous
6 Anonymous Nacht en Morgen en andere verhalen Door den hoofdredacteur van "De vriend van oud en jong"
Leiden R. Fuik 1880 First Edition Hardcover Very Good 8vo
96 p., [2] bl. pages; Date is approximate. Publisher's brown cloth, covers decoratively stamped in blind and lettered in gilt. Colored frontispiece and three full page chromolithographed plates. (The frontispiece and the first of the plates are mounted on heavier coated paper stock; the first plate appears to have been mounted over another plate, of which just a tiny bit of the border is now visible). Very minor wear and rubbing to the spine ends, just a hint of cracking to the inner hinges, text paper is slightly toned thorughout, but a very good copy of this scarce Dutch book for children. Undated, but the OCLC description suggests a date in the 1880's, which seems entirely reasonable considering the appearance, materials and style of the book. [OCLC Number: 68943020. The only location cited is the University of Groningen Library(Bibliotheek Rijksuniversiteit Groningen - Netherlands) ]. As to the note on the title page identifiying the author as the hoofdredacteur van "De vriend van oud en jong" -- it is interesting to note that another Dutch book for children published by the same firm: 'Hoe Karel uit doodsgevaar gered werd : kerstverhaal voor de jeugd' has an OCLC entry with the following note: "P. Los Gzn. is den hoofdredacteur van 'De Vriend van Oud en Jong.' " Not in Brinkman [Catalogus der boek-, plaat en kaartwerken... precursor of the Dutch National Bibliography]. ; Experience the pleasure of reading and appreciating this actual printed item. It has its own physical history that imbues it with a character lacking in ephemeral electronic renderings.

8 p.l., 766 & [2] pages; Original flexible paste-paper boards. Spine quite worn, with upper portion now missing, exposing the sewing and the folded ends of the gatherings, some soiling and marks to the front and rear covers, hinges still attached by the sewing, upper corner of the first several leaves bumped, some lifting to the front paste-down endpaper. With engraved frontispiece and over 100 half-page illustrations throughout, along with an assortment of woodcut decorative tailpieces. With two Rockwell Kent bookplates, designed by the artist himself, mounted to the front paste-down endpaper. These bookplates date from Kent's second and third marriages. While living on Monhegan early in the twentieth century, Rockwell Kent met his first wife, Kathleen Whiting, a niece of painter Abbott Handerson Thayer. Over the course of the next 13 years, the couple had five children together until their divorce in 1925. Kent was married again in 1926 to Frances Lee Higgins, and, after a 1939 divorce, yet another marriage followed in 1940 to Shirley (“Sally”) Johnstone. Both bookplates Kent used for this book were exhibited at SUNY Plattsburg's State Art Museum "Art of the Bookplate" at the University's Rockwell Kent Gallery. [The larger plate is #458 - Frances and Rockwell Kent, 1928, image: 2 5/8 x 1 3/4 ", paper: 3 x 2 1/8 ". The smaller plate mounted beneath is #560- Sally and Rockwell Kent, 1955, image: approx. 1 1 x 1 1/4 ", paper: 1 5/16 x 1 1/2 "]. There is an interesting inscription in ink on a front blank leaf: "To Clarke Bowen / Compliments of / Mr. Joseph Calì / Artist / Malta / 31st March / 1914." Giuseppe Calì (1846 –1930) was a Maltese painter, born in Valletta of Neapolitan parents and educated at the Accademia delle Belle Arti in Naples. He was a prolific artist: almost every church of any consequence in Malta boasts work by Giuseppe Calì. He was commemorated by the Republic of Malta with a series of four postage stamps in 1996, and a coin in 2004. The 'New York Times' (23 May 1915) printed a notice of a private exhibition of Clarke Bowen's collection of art, furniture and objects at his home, Woodhaven [Queens], noting that most of Bowen's paintings had been aquired in Malta. There are also brief eighteenth century ownership inscriptions on that same front blank and the title page. Printed as an unusually tall 12mo. Collation: [-] 8 A-Ii 12. With both half title and a genuine initial blank leaf ([-]1). Despite the wear to the fragile original boards, a clean and complete copy of what is now a rare book. OCLC Number: 636308750 (locating a single copy only, at the Sistema Bibliotecario Ticinese, Lugano, Switzerland. From the collation, it appears that this sole OCLC copy lacked the initial blank leaf, and had only the text of the "Vecchio Testamento" - ending with page 504). A search of the huge database of ICCU [4600 Italian libraries -- Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo Unico (delle biblioteche italiane e per le informazioni bibliografiche)] turns up three copies in Italy -- [Biblioteca comunale Planettiana - Jesi - AN; Biblioteca del Monte - Perugia - PG; and Biblioteca comunale Manfrediana - Faenza - RA]. The collation of the uniform listing is completely in accord with our copy, with the blank leaf, the frontispiece, 766 pages of text (Testamenti Vecchio e Nuovo) and [2] pages of "Tavola." The Hauptbibliothek Altstadt at Heidelberg University has a copy with identical pagination (and the same frontispiece), but evidently dated "1760." Since that date, ten years earlier than our copy, is not mentioned in the 4600 library database of the ICCU, I suggest that this is a typographical error in modern cataloguing rather than a variant. No copies recorded in the USA, none in the British Library, or the Bibliotheque Nationale. Some of the many illustrations throughout show some wear in this copy, and the plates from which those were printed were almost certainly reused from earlier sources. Still, ownership of this copy seemed to inspire two reknowned artists, and at least one American collector of paintings.
