Pollock, Frederick Essays in Jurisprudence and Ethics London Macmillan and Co. 1882 First Edition; First Printing Hardcover Very Good- 8vo x, [1], 383 pp [4 pp ads] pages; Publisher's terra-cotta cloth, ruled in black and spine lettered in gilt. Black endpapapers. Cloth is worn at the spine ends, particularly at the top, with a 3/4" closed tear from the top edge, some rubbing and wear along the rear hinge, minor bumping to the corners. Faint rectangular mark to upper cover (left by the removal of a private label?) Endpapers starting along inner hinges, but tight in the binding. The black endpapers are clean and undamaged. With half-title and 4 pages of publisher's ads at the end. A decent copy of the first edition, with the original binding showing wear but not abuse. With no marks of provenance or previous ownership. To call this book a classic of law and jurisprudence is to engage in understatement. ; Experience the pleasure of reading and appreciating this actual printed item. It has its own physical history that imbues it with a character lacking in ephemeral electronic renderings.

A clean, unmarked copy, with text in perfect condition of what is perhaps the first work in English since Austin's to attempt a systematic analysis of rights. Terry was an American scholar, trained at Yale, who spent most of his career teaching in Japan. Terry dedicated this important text to Yale President Noah Porter ('by his attached friend and pupil..."). But the author, who was a significant figure in post-Austin Jurisprudence scholarship, wrote the text in Japan where he was then Professor of Law at the University of Tokyo. With the ownership signature of Francis X. Dwyer on the front free-endpaper. Dwyer was co-author of a widely used textbook: "Introduction to the Study of Law," by Edmund M. Morgan and Francis X. Dwyer. (2d ed.
