1 Aboab, Isaac - 14th century [Hebrew] Sefer Menorat ha-ma'or
Vilna [Vilnius, Lithuania] Rom - Bi-defus ha-almanah yehe-ahim Rom 1890 Hardcover Good 4to
2 vols. pages; Contemporary half pebbled dark brown morocco over black cloth. Considerable wear and rubbing to the corners, both backstrips now lost. Two volume edition of Isaac Aboab's Menorat ha-Maor, the great household book of medieval Jews. This two volume edition also has the commentary and Yiddish version of Moses Frankfurter [1672-1762] -- Nefesh Yehudah. The volumes were printed in Vilnius, Lithuania -- a major Jewish center at the time of publication. There are title pages in Hebrew and Russian (both detached and worn in the margins), followed by title pages entirely in Hebrew. 324; 328 pp. (After the Holocaust, Vilnius has a Jewish population of about half of one percent; books like this one certainly suffered a similar catastrophic decline in fortune). The provenance of our set is interesting. Leopold Strouse, the Baltimore philanthropist gave these volumes to Johns Hopkins University. The donor established the collection which Hopkins called the Leopold Strouse Semitic Collection; by the time of Strouse's death in 1904, there were over 2500 volumes. Johns Hopkins de-accessioned this set, the two Hopkins bookplates have been stamped "Withdrawn". It appears that Hopkins then sent these to the Library of Congress, so that the Exchange and Gift Division might seek another institutional owner. These were sold by the LC in the mid 1970's and entered the booktrade, after being stamped "Surplus-Duplicate." Bindings worn, and text on paper which is toned throughout and somewhat brittle. A scarce survivor. OCLC Number: 319760215.

Leipzig Dykschen Buchhandlung 1891 Second Edition Hardcover Very Good 12mo
Geschichtschreiber der deutschen Vorzeit; xxxxiii, 286 pages; Publisher's pebbled brown cloth over pebble-surfaced paper covered boards. Ekkehard IV (c. 980 – c. 1056), the author of the Casus sancti Galli, was a monk of the Abbey of Saint Gall. The chronicle Casus S. Galli was begun by Ratpert and continued to Abbot Salomon (883), and carried it on from that date to Notker (972). This work is a most important document for the contemporary history of St. Gall. This is the second of the major editions published in the nineteenth century -- (the first was edited by von Arx in 'Monumenta Germaniae Historica Scriptores II,' Hanover, 1829). This German version by the great Swiss historian Gerold Meyer von Knonau [1843-1931] was first published in St. Gallen in 1877 (as St. Gallische Geschichtsquellen, Bd. 3 = Mittheilungen zur vaterländischen Geschichte, Bde. 15/16). In 1879, Meyer's version became part of the series 'Geschichtschreiber der deutschen Vorzeit." This copy represents the second edition of that series; although the title page here is not dated, [OCLC record Number: 299907957] suggests a date of 1891. It is easily distinguished from the third edition of the series, which offered Casus Sancti Galli in a new translation by Placid Bütler (also published by Dyk, in 1925). An excellent copy, unworn, but showing just a touch of light rubbing along the edges of the boards. In Fraktur type. (Do not confuse this 19th century original with the various print on demand versions).

Zürich Meyer und Zeller 1858 Hardcover Very Good Small 8vo
2 p.l., 203 & [1, errata] pages; Contemporary pattern-printed paper-covered boards, flat spine ruled in gilt, red titling slip lettered in gilt. Probably a publisher's binding. This is one of the early modern editions of "Orendel" -- a Middle High German poem, traditionally called a "Spielmannsdichtung." The first 103 pages contain the edition of the poem in the Middle High German original with numbered stanzas, and the final 100 pages consist of the introduction and notes by the editor Ludwig Ettmüller. This introduction cites the oldest manuscript of this poem, (Orendel is thought to date from the 12th century) known to the editor, which he states was written on paper in 1477 (small folio, on 64 leaves); in Ettmüller's time, this manuscript was in the Stadbibliothek in Strassburg. Today, alas, it is considered to be lost. Ettmüller also mentions a printed edition from Augsburg dated 1512 -- "Ein Hubsche Histori zu lesen vonvnsers Herre Rock wie der wunderbarlich einem kunig (Orendel genant) worden ist." (Evidently, there were two editions printed in 1512, one in verse, the other in prose). The story is associated with the town of Trier on the banks of the Moselle (called Treves in English), where the poem was probably written. Trier is the oldest city in Germany, founded in or before 16 BC. The poem's introduction narrates the story of the Holy Coat, which, after many adventures, is swallowed by a whale. It is recovered by Orendel, son of King Eigel of Treves, who had embarked with twenty-two ships in order to woo Bride, the mistress of the Holy Sepulchre, as his wife. There is a shipwreck, the whale is captured, and after hundreds of lines worth of troubles and adventures, Orendel wins Bride and gets the magic coat. An angel summons the pair to return to Trier, where eventually, Orendel places the coat in a stone sarcophagus. Another angel annouces that Orendel and Bride are soon to die; they renouce the world and prepare for the end. The editor of this 1858 volume, Ernst Moritz Ludwig Ettmüller (1802 – 1877), was a noted German philologist. In addition to his editing a large number of standard German and Low German texts, Ettmüller also made an alliterative translation of Beowulf (1840), an Anglo-Saxon chrestomathy entitled Engla and Seaxna scopas and boceras (1850), and a well-known Lexicon Anglo-Saxonicum (1851). He composed at least two original literary works ['Deutsche Stammkönige' (1844) and 'Das verhängnissvolle Zahnweh, oder Karl der Grosse und der Heilige Goar' (1852)] -- making use of the alliterative versification which he so admired in the old German poems. This 1858 'Orendel' is in excellent condition, apart from some moderate diffusing foxing to a few gatherings -- unmarked, tight and clean. There is a small late 19th century bookseller's label mounted to the bottom of the rear paste-down endpaper [G. E. Stechert & Co. / (Alfred Hafner) / New York]. Minor rubbing to the hinges and to the paper-covered boards.

Christianiae [Norway] typis C. Gröndahl 1845 First Edition Hardcover Good 4to
[2], vi, 220 & 3 ff. facs pages; Contemporary patterned brown cloth, somewhat shaken, lacks the spine. The title page is detached, but present (having been attached to the following pair of leaves by an old-fashioned paper-clip). With the Library of Congress bookplate ("Huitfeldt-Kaas Collection") mounted to the front paste-down endpaper. There is a handsome presentation inscription on the facing blank leaf, from Peter Andreas Munch, to Christian Lange. Beneath this inscription is the LC Surplus-Duplicate stamp in red ink. Apart from a tiny "LC" perforated stamp on the title page, there are no other library marks. There are a few neatly written annotations in brown ink, including two ms. additions to the list of errata at the end. This is the first printed edition of documents relating the history of Munkeliv Abbey -- founded as a Benedictine abbey by King Eystein I (Øystein Magnusson) in about 1110, dedicated to Saint Michael. Munkeliv -- (referred to on the title page as "vulgo Munkalif dicti...") was built on a high spot overlooking Bergen, Norway. It had a complex history, involving being taken over by pirates (once) and (twice) by the Bridgettines. It survived the Black Death, but suppressed by the Reformation and the whole complex was destroyed by fire in 1536. Twelve years after this publication by the leading Norwegian historian, Peter Andreas Munch, excavations were begun on its sight. Among the finds was a marble head of Øystein Magnusson (a.k.a. King Eystein I, the founder of the abbey) -- supposedly the oldest-known portrait of a Norwegian. P. A. Munch, the editor of this significant document, became well known for his work concerning the medieval history of Norway. His work also touched on Norwegian archaeology, geography, ethnography, linguistics, and jurisprudence. For his achievements, he received a substantial grant to work in the Papal archives in the Vatican, for which he moved to Rome. He is said to have been one of the first non-Catholics to gain full access to the Vatican archives. He was also the uncle of the painter Edvard Munch. This 1845 work includes three full page lithographic facsimiles of manuscripts at the end, printed on thicker paper. See OCLC Number: 833826807.
