The First Edition with all the required points for the First Issue: it has the hypenated Scalawagons and the stylized OZ at the spine, the 16 page gatherings, and the list of titles on the rear flap with the misprint. (Hanff & Greene, No. XXXV). Contents unmarked, clean and tight in original purplish-red cloth binding with wonderful bright illustration mounted on front board depicting Ozma in an emerald green scalawagon. Lettering and decorative image at spine in black, pictorial endpapers of Emerald City. Scarce dustjacket (with $1.50 price intact) has considerable wear (now in protective mylar cover): edgewear, a crease down front panel, 1/4" chip at top of front panel, significat chips at spine ends and 1"x1/2" piece missing near middle of spine, rear panel split along spine edge, small triangular chip at lower corner of rear panel and a 1" closed tear at top edge of rear panel (looks much better than it sounds). 6 Pyrnelle, Louise-Clarke; William Ludwell Sheppard DIDDIE, DUMPS, AND TOT or Plantation Child Life
New York Harper & Brothers (1882) Hardcover Very Good+ 8vo 
217, (2) pages; Clean and tight in original olive cloth binding with wrap-around decorative stamping in black/dark green depicting bats, cotton growing from rear board around spine to front board. Publishers' catalogue of "Interesting Books for Boys" at rear (2 pp). No date on titlepage, date on copyright page 1882; plain white endpapers. There are twelve wonderful b&w llustrations by WLS (William Ludwell Sheppard, 1833-1912) depicting life of negroes on the plantations. Sheppard spent most of his life in his native town Richmond, Virigina. He was a watercolorist, painter and noted illustrator, who first gained attention for his designs for tobacco labels. He studied in New York City and Paris before 1860, and London and Paris between 1877-1878. During the Civil War he enlisted with the Richmond Howitzers (Confederates) in the Army of Northern Virginia, reaching the rank of engineering officer. He was constantly sketching soldiers in the field and camp life, beginning the work that led him to the illustrations which appeared in Harpers', Leslie's and Appleton's magazines. In postbellum years, Sheppard developed increased interest in African American life, as evidenced in the detailed illustrations in this book. Stories in 'black' dialect depicting the lives of children in the antebellum South written by Louise-Clarke Pyrnelle (1850-1907), an Alabama-born writer who wished to keep alive the legends, traditions, games, hymns and superstitions of the Southern slaves in these 17 stories.
