Manning was an Anglican cleric and was made Archdeacon of Chichester in 1841, but his faith in Anglicanism was shattered in 1850, when, in the so-called Gorham judgement; he subsequently converted to Catholicism and in 1865 was chosen as Archbishop of Westminster. Among his accomplishments as head of the Catholic Church in England were the building of Westminster Cathedral and expansion of Roman Catholic education. In 1875, Archbishop Manning was made a cardinal and used his influence to promote a modern Roman Catholic view of social justice. These views are reflected in the papal encyclical Rerum Novarum issued by Leo XIII, which was the beginning of modern Roman Catholic social justice teaching.; Experience the pleasure of reading and appreciating this actual printed item. It has its own physical history that imbues it with a character lacking in ephemeral electronic renderings.
