2 Balfour, Patrick ; [ Lord Kinross ] THE RUTHLESS INNOCENT
London Hamish Hamilton 1949 First Edition; First Printing Hardcover Fine in Near Fine dust jacket 8vo
Some minor wear at head and heel of spine - quite a nice copy of this scarce novel by Lord Kinross (his first published book). John Patrick Douglas Balfour, 3rd Baron Kinross (1904–1976) was a Scottish historian and writer noted for his biography of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and other works on Islamic history. Educated at Winchester College and Balliol College, Oxford, he became first a journalist and later a writer of history and travel books. During the Second World War he served with the Royal Air Force and from 1944-47 was First Secretary at the British Embassy at Cairo. Lord Kinross was a homosexual, despite a brief marriage to Angela Mary Culme-Seymour (1912-2012), the former wife of the artist John Spencer-Churchill. When Balfour was posted to Cairo during World War II, she began a five-year relationship with Major Robert Hewer-Hewitt which produced two sons. Lord Kinross and Angela were divorced in 1942. The main character in The Ruthless Innocent was supposedly based on Angela Culme-Seymour. ; Experience the pleasure of reading and appreciating this actual printed item. 13 Brown, Dan The Da Vinci Code - A Novel [First Edition, First Printing]
New York Doubleday 2003 0385504209 / 9780385504201 First Edition; First Printing Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket 8vo
5 p.l. & 454 pages; Publisher's black cloth-backed boards, spine lettered in gilt. Dust jacket with raised letters, and price intact at the center top of the front flap: "U.S. $24.95/Canada $37.95" This is a very nice copy of the first printing of the first edition of one of the runaway best sellers of our time. It has all the points of issue which indicate its status as a first. [9-1/2" tall; complete number-line and statement "First Edition" on the verso of the title page; the two mis-spelled words ("skitoma" on page 243, and "Lyon" on page 152). To be critical, this copy's dust jacket has a 3/4" crease at the top edge of the rear panel -- a minor crease, not a snag or a tear, and two faint creaselettes on the front flap. The corners of the boards are sharp and crisp. In other words, it has been read, but carefully, and is very nearly fine -- certainly fresh, clean and unmarked in any way.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT Resurrecting the Art of Eating, Capon, Robert Farrar
20 Capon, Robert Farrar FOOD FOR THOUGHT Resurrecting the Art of Eating
New York Harcourt Brace Jovanovich 1978 0151272670 / 9780151272679 First Edition; First Printing Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket 8vo 8" - 9" tall
233 pages; Clean and secure in original binding in very nice dustjacket (NOT clipped). An essential volume for those who appreciate good food. "Capon's playfully philosophical manifesto on the art of eating is not just one more lament over the demise of home cooking. It is instead a sustained attempt to refresh both our sensibilities about food and our approach to arousing them. Though filled with recipes, it is not a cookbook, but rather a spiritual guide, by means of cookery, to ressurectin all of life's pleasures. It is clutter, Capon argues, that is the archenemy of the best. Elegance in food and joy in eating come with the realization that less is more ..." Along with Capon's foody philosophy, some of the recipes include: Szechwan Braised Eggplant, Chicken with Asparagus, Chicken Skin and Cucumber Salad, Shrimp with Lobster Sauce, Pork and Pickled Mustard Cabbage, Red Cooked Lamb, Pork Congee, Shredded Beef and Celery, dozens of different sauces, etc.
