Scherer, James A. B LION OF THE VIGILANTES William T. Coleman and the Life of Old San Francisco Indianapolis Bobbs-Merrill 1939 First Edition Hardcover Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket William Tell Coleman of Kentucky and St. Louis, went out to the gold fields with his brother in 1849. Realizing his path to wealth lay not in mining, but in merchandizing, he migrated down to San Francisco in 1850. At that time San Francisco was a lawless city at the mercy of crooks and gamblers and bullies. Coleman was instrumental in wresting control of the city back into the hands of the civilized through the Vigilance Committees of 1851, 1856 and 1877. The growth of his shipping industry, his work to found California enterprise and to gain respect for it in the East, his part in quelling the Draft Riots in New York during the Civil War, his exploitation of the borax fields of Death Valley--all these ventures proved him a great American.
