Cotton, William A. Bromsgrove Church - Its History & Antiquities with an Account of the Sunday Schools, Churchyard, and Cemetery, Compiled from the Parish Books, Registers, and Other Authentic Sources Bromsgrove, (Worcestershire) Messenger Publishing Company (1881) First Edition Hardcover Very Good- 4to 11" - 13" tall; [xiv] + 158 & [2] pp. pages; Publisher's brown cloth, decoratively stamped and blocked in black and blind, lettered on the front cover in gilt, chocolate endpapers, text block edges stained red. A nice copy, but for a modest stain affecting the lower fourth of the rear board (no evidence to endpapers or contents, and a minor repaired tear along the top half inch of the front gutter edge of the spine. First and last couple of leaves with foxing, otherwise clean and tight. Dual imprint: London: Simpkin , Marshall and Co.; Bromsgrove: "Messenger" Publishing Company. Frontispiece, nine full page plates in bistre, and 7 woodcuts in the text. A nice Victorian survey of the history and notable antiquities of a church with very old roots (the parish is mentioned in the Domesday Book). Of special interest to bell-ringers, with an entire chapter devoted to the history of the belfry, including details of many particular episodes of ringing of changes (full peals of Bob Major, Grandsire Tripples, Grandsire Cators, etc.) The plates in red are lovely.
