1 Octave Feuillet ; Dumas, Alexandre & Nodier, Charles Picture Story Books By Great Authors and Great Painters The Life and Adventures of Punchinello / Good Lady Bertha's Honey Broth / Bean Flower and Pea Blossom / Genius Goodfellow and the Wood-Cutter's Dog
New York D. Appleton & Company 1847 First Edition Hardcover Very Good
80pp, [2], 80pp, [2], 66pp, [2], 66 pages; Contemporary binding of the time of issue (almost certainly the original publisher's binding): Brown half morocco over blue and gold marbled paper-covered boards, spine with five narrow raised bands highlighted with gilt dots and rules, title [PICTURE STORY BOOK] stamped in gilt directly in the second panel, green and cream pattern-printed endpapers. A splendid copy of a scarce American juvenile. Appleton issued these four titles separately as chapbooks in wrappers, but also issued a few sets of an edition collecting these four titles with their original titles pages bound together in handsome half morocco as 'Picture Story Books By Great Authors and Great Painters." There are full-page wood-engraved frontispieces to each of the four titles, and approximately 400 smaller wood-engravings throughout the text. Most pages have more than one illustration. A splendid and beautifully preserved copy, with no evidence of handling by the generations of young "readers" to which it would have been so appealing. To be critical, there is a tiny break at the cap of the spine (1 mm. missing at the left-hand side), some minor rubbing along the hinges (particularly the front) and the corners, and moderate transfer marks at the outermost 1 cm. of the corners of the endpapers (stains to those portions of the endpapers which touch the turn-ins of the morocco leather binding at the covers. No signatures, bookplates, coloring by previous owners, or marks of any sort. This was a popular compilation; Appleton reissued the plates twenty years later with revised title pages, in 1867. But the present pre-Civil War edition is uncommon, especially in this favorable condition. OCLC Number: 17336881.; Experience the pleasure of reading and appreciating this actual printed item. It has its own physical history that imbues it with a character lacking in ephemeral electronic renderings.
