338 pages; Original owner's bookplate on front pastedown "Allen Wall / 934 B St SW" otherwise clean and tight in original brown cloth binding with gilt lettering. Rev. Alfred Nevin (1816 - 1890) was born in Shippensburg, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Carlisle College (Dickinson) in 1837. He wrote a number of historical works including this Churches of the Valley, A Guide to the Oracles, History of the Presbytery of Philadelphia, Men of Mark of the Cumberland Valley, and A Popular Commentary on the gospel according to Luke. Nevin was Pastor of the Alexander Presbyterian Church, at Nineteenth and Green streets, Philadelphia He was commissioned as a Chaplain in the Union Army on November 19, 1863, during the American Civil War, and served until his honorable muster out on July 15, 1863. After the War, he served as Chaplain of the Satterlee United States Army General Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He died in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1890.
