1 Swinburne, Algernon Charles A SONG OF ITALY
London John Camden Hotten 1867 First Edition Hardcover Very Good
66 & ads pages; Publisher's bright blue smooth cloth, with date "1867" in gilt letters at the foot of the spine, black endpapers. The first edition was 3000 copies and apparantly exceeded the original demand to the extent that various remainder bindings and new combinations of advertisements are found in copies. This copy is bright and fresh, apart from minor rubbing and loss of binding color at the spine ends and tips of the corners. The blue cloth is smooth, rather than ribbed; the serif of the letter "F" in the word "OF" in the title on the spine has the longer, slanted serif; the front advertisements appear between the front free endpaper (black on its recto) and the front blank which precedes the half title. The rear ads are entirely unopened, but this handsome copy is unusual in that a previous owner has opened every leaf of the text -- (with care, but for a minor miscue at the top margin near the gutter of four leaves at the center). Details of the faded letters or battered state of certain letters or words in the ads will be cheerfully suppied upon request. ["Jocasta" is perfect... "printed" in the notice for Hotten's Anacreon, is not]. See Wise 38; Carter, Binding Variants p. 157. ; Experience the pleasure of reading and appreciating this actual printed item. It has its own physical history that imbues it with a character lacking in ephemeral electronic renderings.
