Cook, M. B. JAPAN - A Sailor's Visit to the Island Empire New York John B. Alden 1891 First Edition; First Printing Hardcover Very Good 12mo; 146 pages; Publisher's green cloth, decoratively lettered in gilt on the spine and front panel. A tight, nicely preserved copy, with just minor rubbing at the spine ends and corner tips, and a small faint stain to the upper portion of the front cover. Inscribed, but not signed by the author in ink on the front free endpaper:" 'Journal' / with the Author's / compliments." This appears to have been a presentation from Cook, a sailor from Friendship, Maine, to the Kennebec "Journal" -- which was owned at the time by Edwin C. Burleigh, then Governor of Maine. Burleigh became principal owner of the Kennebec Journal in 1887; Governor of Maine 1889-1892; elected as a Republican to the Fifty-fifth Congress in 1897 to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Seth L. Milliken; reelected to the Fifty-sixth and to the five succeeding Congresses and served from June 21, 1897, to March 3, 1911; after he was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1910; Burleigh resumed newspaper publishing in Augusta, Maine (and later became a U. S. Senator from Maine until his death in 1916). This copy has a bookplate of one C. B. Burleigh, with an accession date in ink of 1891 -- presumably a son or nephew of the Governor's who was taking care of the family's newspaper in Augusta during the owner's term in the State House. Cook's account of Japan is quite interesting. Naturally, he writes of many things observed by most early western tourists in Japan: the sampans, jinrikshas, tea houses, temples, etc. But he was also an invited guest at the ceremonies attendant to the adoption of the new Constitution of 1889-90.
