Gand & Paris Claudin Libraire, librairie ancienne et moderne de Duquesne 1859 Hardcover Very Good Illustrated by Félicien Rops
etching; Small 8vo; 335; 324,viii,112 pages; Contemporary half calf over marbled boards, five raised bands on the spine, which has gilt lettered labels in red and black and other panels tooled in gilt, marbled endpapers. A deluxe reprint edition, issued in a small edition of 134 copies. This is one of the 116 examples on handmade paper. The calf spines are rubbed, with loss at the spine ends and along the lower part of the rear hinge to the first volume. The contents are fine and fresh, including the superb etched frontispiece by Félicien Rops. This is a delicate sheet depicting several seventeenth century figures, printed on papier chine with a grey tint - image size 128 x 90mm. See Rouir 633 I/II; Deman 84; Exsteens 687; Mascha 772; and Ramiro 352. The etching does not seem to be present in most surviving copies. No mention, for example, in OCLC. 3 volumes, bound in 2, as usual. The third volume has a separate title page, but only 112 pp. Each of the two volumes has a handsome bookplate with stylized initials intertwined and a banner with the legend: "cum libris semper et ubique jucunda societas" This is probably the bookplate of the Comte de Chamberet - (Georges de Chamberet, marquis de Frontenay, poet, musician, and man of taste). Laid in loosely is a 1946 typed letter from the noted bookseller Herbert Reichner, quoting this set and a few other items ("ALL very RARE").
