1 Census, United States Bureau of the HEADS OF FAMILIES AT THE FIRST CENSUS OF THE UNITED STATES TAKEN IN THE YEAR 1790 Records of the State Enumerations: 1782 to 1785 - VIRGINIA
Washington Government Printing Office 1908 First Edition Paperback Very Good
4to 11" - 13" tall; 189 pages; Clean and tight in original tan printed wrappers, but for an occasional check mark next to a name. Large folding map of Virginia at front. A valuable reference for tracing family histories with particular reference to Virginia. The First Census of the United States (1790) comprised an enumeration of the inhabitants of the present states of Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, and Virginia. Unfortunately, during the War of 1812, when the British burned the Capitol at Washington, the returns for several states were destroyed, including those for Virginia. However, the United States Government, and with the cooperation of the Virginia State Library, published this book in an attempt to partially reconstruct the 1790 document. Because of the method used by the Government in collecting the data, information is presented in several ways, but always includes the name of the Head of Family.
