New York Boni and Liveright 1927 Limited/Numbered Edition Hardcover Very Good-
Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 359 pages; Publisher's binding: black cloth, covers with bevelled edges, leather spine label lettered in gilt (top portion missing), black endpapers, with a facsimile signature Isadora Duncan at the center of the front free endpaper. Top edges gilt, others trimmed rough. The "Presentation edition" -- with special limitation leaf which states that the edition was "especially printed for the authors and other friends of Boni and Liveright. The edition is limited to 650 copies, none of them for sale." Copy number 404/650. This limitation leaf is dated "January, 1928." The 1928 date is also stamped at the foot of the spine. Isadora Duncan died in a bizarre automobile accident on September 14, 1927 when her flowing scarf was caught in the wheel and rear axle of a sportscar in Nice. She had finished this autobiography in the summer according to the publishers, but had not seen or corrected printer's proofs. [There can be no signed copies, as even this preliminary edition was printed after her much publicized death]. Of interest to photographic history as well as connoisseurs of the dance, as two of the 23 plates reproduce photographs by Arnold Genthe (including the frontispiece) and three others reproduce photographs by Edouard Steichen. This text concludes with Duncan's romantic account of her answering a telegram inviting her to come to the Soviet Union to teach dance to children. After a triumphant world career, Isadora Duncan died as a Soviet citizen; reportedly, her will was the first of a Soviet citizen to go through probate in the Amerian court system. This copy of the sought-after presentation edition in its special binding shows minor wear and marking to the covers. Alas, the top portion of the leather spine label is now missing (including the entire word: "MY" and the top bar of the "E" in "LIFE") Four or five leaves at the center have faint small marks or paper flaws in the blank margins.
