Autograph; 8vo; LENGTHY INSCRIPTION FROM THE AUTHOR to Roger Stevens, a founder and director of the Kennedy Center, a founder of the National Endowment for the Arts and a noted theatrical producer. Inscription dated November 1971 which references the play in which Ehle's wife actress Rosemary Harris starred -- Harold Pinter's OLD TIMES produced by Roger Stevens at the Billy Rose Theatre (opened Nov 16, 1971). The play received five Tony award nominations. First Edition stated, number code on last page goes down to "1", denoting a 1st printing. Novel set in the mountains of North Carolina. By the author of "The Winter People, " "The Land Breakers, " etc. In The Journey of August King, John Ehle works a smaller canvas than he has heretofore in his epic novels of the North Carolina mountains with extroardinary results. The reader is introduced to two of the most exciting and enchanting characters in recent fiction -- Williamsburg, a beautiful young Negro slave determined against impossible odds to find her way to the North and freedom, and August King, a mountain man who believes that her freedom could be his freedom too..
