Autograph; 8vo ; 112 pages; Publisher's binding: quarter cloth over red paper-covered boards, spine lettered in gilt, title page printed in black and red. Fore and bottom edges trimmed rough. Signed by the author on the half title page -- as are all copies of this special fine-press edition. Colophon at rear (printed in red): number 522 of 896 copies (850) for sale. Four stories of the Forsythe saga, which made John Galsworthy one of the most famous writers of the first third of the twentieth century. He was elected as the first president of the International PEN literary society in 1921, was appointed to the Order of Merit in 1929—after earlier turning down a knighthood—and was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1932. The Forsythe saga, unlike much of Galsworthy's work, has a lasting popularity, due in large part to screen and television adaptations (including a 1949 MGM movie, and highly successful TV series in 1967 on the BBC, and 2002 on Grenada). The Fountain Press was one of several small presses founded to issue limited editons of books produced to very high standards, connected with and distributed by Random House, including the Bowling Green Press, the Fountain Press and that of Crosby Gaige. This copy is internally fine and unmarked, but the binding shows modest wear, with toning along the spine, some rubbing at the bottom, a small strip which is sunned along the top edge of the front cover, points of wear at the corners of the boards, and a mark at the top edges of the text block (not detectable in the text itself). Sound and very good, unmarked, and neatly signed by John Galsworthy at the center of the half title leaf. ; Signed by Author
