1 Schlabrendorf, Gustav, Graf von ; [ Napoleon ] BONAPARTE AND THE FRENCH PEOPLE under his Consulate
London Tipper and Richards 1804 Hardcover Very Good Illustrated by Two portraits
; Engravings; 12mo; 4 p.l., 379 pages; Slightly later half calf over marbled boards (mid nineteenth century) --with raised bands, gilt decorations, black spine label lettered in gilt, top edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Moderate rubbing to the head of the spine, with a small repair to one side and a bit of erosion at the cap. Even so, a sound and handsome copy of the first edition in English, with the halftitle, and the two full-page engraved portraits (Prince Eugene and MarechalNey). Light scattered foxing to the two portraits, otherwise, the text isclean and fresh. B00085BYUW In his unflattering view of Napoleon Bonaparte, Gustav Grafvon Schlabrendorf compared him to the Roman emperor, Tiberius, exclaiming ashe entered the Senate, 'O homines ad servitum paratos!' -- (O men, fittedfor slavery). Napoleon responded by ordering the German edition of this booksuppressed. Many English readers were still forming an impression ofNapoleon in the summer of 1804 when this book appeared. They would have reason to know him much better in the near future.
