Sylvestre Bonnard, an elderly and highly esteemed scholar, encounters unexpected problems when he embarks upon a search for an ancient ecclesiastical literary document that takes him from Paris to Sicily. For the sake of justice and love, he ends up committing acts that at best are of doubtful legality. The illustrator Zhenya Gay, born Eleanor Byrnes, was a famous book illustrator and animal lover. She and her companion Helen Reitman, aka Jan Gay, lived together in New York and established a nudist colony in Highlands, New York.
