8vo ; Former owner's inscription on pastedown endpaper - "Douglas H. Gordon from Cousin Lucie M? / 1877" - (likely Douglas Hamilton Gordon (1817-1883) of Baltimore). Light scattered foxing, front hinge splitting across endpapers, cloth worn and frayed along edges. Mead was a journalist who had spent a decade in the sub-continent. Though Mead is very critical of the Sepoy rebels, he also denounces the British colonial administration for "the cruelty, the oppression, and the measureless folly of our rule" in India, which is based on "torture and lawlessness, and the perpetual suffering of millions." The first edition (Murray, 1857) of this title is listed as Item 486 in Ladendorf's excellent reference - The Revolt in India 1857-58: An Annotated Bibliography.
