Hawkes, Jacquetta ; Henry Moore A LAND with Drawings by Henry Moore London Cresset Press 1951 First Edition; First Printing Hardcover Very Good+ in Very Good dust jacket 8vo ; 248 pages; Publisher's beige buckram cloth, title stamped in gilt on a red panel on the spine. Dust jacket printed in red against a beige shell pattern. The text on the front flap of the dust jacket states "'A Land' is a difficult book to classify. It is not a work of science or of the imagination, but rather a combination of the two..." The author, Jaquetta Hawkes [1910-1996] was well positioned in both scientific and imaginative circles. She was born Jacquetta Hopkins, the third child of Sir Frederick Gowland Hopkins and Lady Hopkins (nee Jessie Stephens). Her father was a fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge, where his researches into biochemistry led to his discovery of vitamins for which in 1929 he was awarded a Nobel Prize. He was a cousin of the poet Gerard Manley Hopkins. His younger daughter combined the rigours of scholarly research with the imagination of a poet and a writer. Regardless of the assignment of a category to sort "A Land," there is one overwhelming reason to seek an attractive copy of this book - the two splendid color plate illustrations by Henry Moore: the wonderful frontispiece and an equally fine full page color plate (facing p. 120). Poet / archaeologist Jacquetta Hawkes had an interesting life. She met her first husband on her first serious undertaking as a brilliant student, an excavation of a pre-Roman Celtic capital just outside the Roman town of Colchester. The director of the excavation was a young archaeologist, Christopher Hawkes; they were married in 1933. During the war, which involved some periods of separation from her husband, Jacquetta met and fell passionately in love with the poet W.J. Turner. This affair stimulated her imaginative and creative faculties, and she published her only book of poetry Symbols and Speculations in 1948. Alas, Walter Turner died suddenly of a brain hemorrhage in December 1946; this book The Land is dedicated to his memory. Jacquetta Hawkes then met J. P. Priestley at a UNESCO conference in Mexico. They fell in love, and were free to marry in 1953, and remained husband and wife until Priestley's death. This is a nice copy of the first edition of "A Land" with its fine Henry Moore drawings. The binding is clean and unmarked (albeit very, very slightly cocked). The dust jacket is clean, integral and unclipped (21 s. net price); there are moderate tears and chipping to the edges and one small hole along the upper gutter of the junction between the spine and the front cover.
