Forword by Richard Dillon and an introduction by C.D. Shane. Excellent biographical study of this noted businessman of the California Gold Rush era. In later life Lick was a generous philanthropist. Lick arrived in San Francisco from Lima, Peru in 1848 with his tools, a lot of gold, and 600 pounds of chocolate which he sold out of immediately. He convinced his old neighbor in Lima Domingo Ghirardelli to move to San Francisco where he established the Ghirardelli Chocolate Company.
