Story about a young boy (african American), partially in dialect. Ruth McEnery Stuart makes extensive use of stereotypic black dialect and African American characters. Joan Wylie Hall states that Stuart's tales provide a detailed picture of post-Civil War life, and according to Sams, her "Negroes have always the genuine Negro humor, ... while her po' white trash are equally amusing and pathetic in their plentiful lack of humor."
