2 Nearing, Scott ; & Joseph Freeman DOLLAR DIPLOMACY - A Study in American Imperialism
New York B. W. Huebsch and the Viking Press 1925 First Edition; First Printing Tan Cloth Very Good
8vo ; xv & 353 pages; Clean and tight in the publisher's original cream cloth binding. First Edition with the same date on the titlepage and the copyright page. This scarce book is one of the first publications of the newly-merged firms of B. W. Huebsch and the Viking Press. Huebsch had been established for over a decade when Harold K. Guinzburg and George S. Oppenheimer founded their Viking Press on March 1, 1925. The merger of Viking Press, which had yet to publish a book, with Huebsch came in August of 1925. Like all the early Viking/Huebsch titles, this volume features the soon-to-be familiar Viking logo of a ship, designed by Rockwell Kent. Huebsch stayed with the new firm as editor, and then a consultant, until his death nearly forty years later. Scott Nearing [1883-1983] was the better known co-author. Nearing had already been a well-known radical economist for ten years in 1925, since his very public firing from the staff of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1915 and his 1919 trial over pacifist publications during World War I. Nearing had grown detached from socialism by the mid-1920's. He had applied for membership in the Worker's Party of America (then, this was essentially the legal name of the Communist Party) in December 1924. Nearing was turned away at the time (but did formally acquire membership after two years as a "fellow traveler" - in 1927). After his formal membership was granted, Scott Nearing went to work on the staff of the CP's daily newspaper, "The Daily Worker," on May 9, 1928, remaining in that position until resigning in January 1930 to publish two works on imperialism. At least one of these books failed to meet the ideological scrutiny of the Communist / WPA organization. Joseph Freeman, however, was already a member when this collaborative study of imperialism was written and published. From 1925 to 1929, Freeman served as a New York correspondent for the Soviet news service, TASS. Along with Eastman and Mike Gold, Freeman founded a successor to both the Liberator and the Masses, called The New Masses, in 1926. Both Nearing and Freeman fell out with the American communists. Freeman's separation was a result of publication of his 1936 memoir "An American Testament." Its publication prompted Party functionaries to denounce Freeman as a "romantic" and an "enemy of the people" because the narrative heaped insufficient praise on Stalin and only perfunctory criticism of Trotsky. Freeman devoted most of his post-Party career to literature, and died in 1965. The better-known Scott Nearing had over fifty years of activity after leaving communism. In his 1972 autobiography, "The Making of a Radical," Scott Nearing described himself as a pacifist, a socialist, and a vegetarian. He was an inspiration to the younger Americans who came to share his belief in rural self-sufficiency. He lived 18 days after his 100th birthday; his widow published a book suggesting that Nearing decided at 100 that enough was enough, and began a fast which resulted in his peaceful death. This copy of Nearing and Freeman's 1925 volume is unlike the typical surviving copies of radical literature from 85 years ago. Most copies were passed through many sets of hands, and show it. This copy is nearly fine, albeit lacking the dust jacket, with clean cream-colored cloth, with just a tiny spot on the spine, and a hint of bumping to the upper corner of the front cover.

4 Nearing, Scott MUST WE STARVE?
New York The Vanguard Press 1932 First Edition Hardcover Very Good-
8vo ; Contents clean and tight in original black cloth binding with green lettering, some wear at head of spine. Nearing believed that unfettered wealth stifled initiative and impeded economic advancement. He hoped progressive thinkers would come to realize this and to accept their civic duty of enlightened leadership. Nearing instead outlined an economic republicanism based upon "equality of opportunity, civic obligation, popular government, and human rights."
