Senex ; [ Robert Reid, 1773-1865 ] Glasgow, Past and Present - Volume III Glasgow David Robertson and Co. 1884 Hardcover Good+ Small 4to 9" - 11" tall; xiii & 580 pages; Publisher's brown cloth, printed paper label on spine, uncut edges. This is the third and final volume of the magesterial 1884 limited edition of "Glasgow, Past and Present." The first edition of this work was printed in two smaller octavo volumes in 1851 with a third volume appearing in 1856. Robert Reid, a merchant and antiquary, who retired from business in 1832 to devote himself to literary pursuits, was the main force behind the work, much of which appeared originally in his columns in the Glasgow Herald, published under the pen-name "Senex." Reid's 'Old Glasgow and its Environs' was issued in 1864, with a portrait of the author. This third volume of the splendidly-produced David Robertson 1884 final edition of these significant Glasgow studies has the entire text of Reid's 'Old Glasgow and its Environs' with the author's final revisions and additions, plus an autobiography of Reid, which appeared in the Glasgow Herald after his death (in 1865, at age 92). There is a folding plan of the Low Green of Glasgow as it was in 1760 (a principal subject of the text, and a large folding 1884 facsimile of Thomas Richardson's 1795 map of Glasgow (c. 29" x 22") -- (which was added to this 1884 edition). The 1884 edition was handsomely printed on rag paper, in an edition limited to 500 copies. This example of volume III is internally fine, crisp and clean, but the binding is worn, with rubbing and minor staining to the paper label, a split along the top half of the rear hinge, and a stain to the upper corner of the rear board.
