Toby THE QUEEN & MR PUNCH - THE STORY OF A REIGN London Bradbury, Agnew & Co. 1897 Hardcover Good+ [copyright 1897]. 11.5" by 9", unpaginated. 60 full page wood-engraved plates, depicting Queen Victoria throughout the first sixty years of her reign in the pages of Punch. (The original dates of publication ran from Sept. 1841 and Jan. 1897. The artists included Richard Doyle, John Leech, Sir John Tenniel, Linley Sambourne and others. A handsome pictorial souvenir of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. Punch was founded just four years into the Queen's long reign, so the images included range from a depiction of a newly-wed Victoria in her early twenties to the stately and beloved Empress heading the most powerful Empire on earth. This copy is in a binding of the period of publication, in red pebbled cloth backed with red morocco leather spine, lettered in gilt. Unfortunately, it shows evidence of damp, with moderate rippling of the leaves, and a faint tide-mark around the edges of the leaves, the first and last eight ff. or so have tinges of red (transfer from the binding) at the extreme fore-edge margins. But the book looks sound on the shelf, with minor rubbing to the spine ends, is clean, dry and stable (with no evidence of mildew or mold), and the images are strong and unaffected throughout. The front free-endpaper has been neatly removed. Halftitle and title page (printed against a decorative tan background) present. Price:
