	3	Wilson, Woodrow MERE LITERATURE AND OTHER ESSAYS Boston Houghton, Mifflin and Company 1896 First Edition; First Printing Green Cloth Very Good+ 8vo ; (vi), 247 pages; Clean and tight in publisher's brown polished buckram cloth binding with gilt lettering at spine and gilt ruling at top of front board, top edges gilt. An extremely nice example of this handsomely produced book, with only faint rubbing and two very tiny chips to the cloth at the spine ends. The First Edition - as indicated by the presence of the date 1896 on the title page as well as the copyright page. In 1896, Wilson had served on the Princeton faculty as professor of jurisprudence and political economy for six years. The Princeton Presidency would come in 1902, his surprize election as Governor of New Jersey in 1910, and his election as the 28th President of the United States in 1912. The eight essays in this 1896 first edition included: Mere Literature, The Author Himself, On an Author's Choice of Company, A Literary Politician, The Interpreter of English Liberty, The Truth of the Matter, A Calendar of Great Americans, and The Course of American History. All but one of these essays first appeared in a periodical (Atlantic Monthly, Century Magazine or Forum). The essay on Edmund Burke was first published in this book. The Wilson collector will have difficulty finding a copy in a better state of preservation than this one. Price: 99.94 USD

Taking an evolutionary approach to human political history, Wilson outlines certain practices of European governments as models for America government.
