2 Becker, Georges Henri Bianchi ; Charles Carriere ; preface par Roger Heim Tournefort [Grands naturalistes francais; collection dirigée par Roger Heim]
Paris Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle 1957 First Edition Paperback Very Good+ 8vo
321 & colophon pages; Publisher's wrappers, printed title and mounted portrait of the subject -- in the original glassine outer jacket, folded in the French manner. Minor wear to the glassine, but a tight, clean copy. This is the second volume of the distinguished series 'Grands Naturalistes Francais' - published under the direction of Roger Heim. The subject: Joseph Pitton de Tournefort [1656-1708] is usually credited with being the first to make a clear distinction between genus and species. He travelled widely in Greece, Constantinople, Armenia, Georgia and other regions along the shores of the Black sea, collecting specimens for his herbarium (a word which Tournefort seems to have invented). One of his memorials is the street in Paris on which he died as the result of a carriage accient, now named in his honor -- (Rue de Tournefort in the 5ème arrondissement).

FORMAL GARDEN IN ENGLAND, Blomfield, Reginald ; F. Inigo Thomas (Illustrator)
5 Blomfield, Reginald ; F. Inigo Thomas (Illustrator) FORMAL GARDEN IN ENGLAND
London MacMillan And Co. 1901 Third Edition Hardcover Very Good
xvi, 250 pages; Early 20th century binding of olive half calf (faded to brown at spine) over green cloth covered boards; gilt lettering and roses within panels on spine, all page edges gilt, light green marbled endpapers. Gilt faded at spine, shallow chipping at head of spine, leather lightly rubbed along edges. Attractive engraved bookplate of Louise Thoron Endicott. Brief inscription on half-title to L.E.dated 1892. Light scattered foxing, otherwise contents clean and tight. Sir Reginald Theodore Blomfield (20 December 1856 – 27 December 1942) was a prolific British architect, garden designer and author of the Victorian and Edwardian period. Blomfeld was an architect and proponent of formal landscape design. Formal gardens in England was his first book, beautifully illustrated by Inigo Thomas. Blomfield's advocacy of formal landscape design drew criticism from William Robinson (1838 – 1935), an Irish practical gardener and journalist whose ideas about wild gardening spurred the movement that evolved into the English cottage garden. Louise T. Endicott was born Louise Marie Thoron in New York on 26 November 1864. The daughter of a socially prominent New York family with strong Boston ties, she was educated in convent schools in the United States and France. She married William C. Endicott, Jr. in 1889.

6 Bois, D. ; et G. T. Grignan ; eds. Le Bon Jardinier - Encyclopédie Horticole Avec 6 planches en couleurs d'après des quarellessss exécutées spécialement par A. Millot. 150é édition
Paris Librairie Agricole de la Maison Rustique 1933 Hardcover Very Good+ Large 8vo
2 p.l & 1036 pages; The text of this well-known encyclopedia of gardening, botany and horticulture was prepared under the direction of D. Bois and G. T. Grignan, with texts by a number of experts ("Rédigée par un groupe de savants et de practicines sou la direction de D. Bois et G. T. Grignan" -- a list of the many authors is on the verso of the first leaf, a facsimile of the decorative title page of the earlier editions). This 150th edition is retitled as Le Bon Jardinier: Encyclopédie horticole -- while the older editions had been styled as "Almanach horticole." Undated, but attributed to 1933 by OCLC Number: 491642408. (There was a 151th edition in 1947). A lovely copy, in fresh, clean condition, in a handsome private binding: half green morocco over blue-green linen covered boards, top edges gilt, green-grey endpapers, silk placemark. The binding is signed by Bumpus of Oxford Street, in tiny letters at the top corner of the verso of the front free-endpaper. There are five raised bands, highlighted with rows of gilt dots and framed by panels of gilt rules - title lettered in gilt directly in the second panel. The spine is moderately faded to brown, a not-unpleasant effect. With an elegant bookplate [Beatrice Louise Gruning] mounted to the front paste-down endpaper. A standard and important gardening reference from the years between the wars, in an elegant copy, much nicer than the publisher's usual cloth or boards.

Wien [Vienna] Hölder 1898 First Edition Hardcover Very Good 8vo
544-655 pages; Contemporary binding: plum colored pebble-grained cloth over pattern printed boards, plain endpapers -- leaves unopened at the top edges, others trimmed rough. This is just the 112 page monograph by Bornmüller, (with a 2- leaf unopened bifolium at the front, and one extra page (i.e., pp. 541-543 at the front, and p. 656) at the rear, so that the important text of Bornmüller's Flora of Syria would be preserved complete. This is the original printing, not to be confused with any of several modern productions. There are no plates or illustrations. On the "extra" first page (541), there is a circular blindstamp of Herman Knoghe, a botanist with the Institut de Botanique, Montpellier -- (Knoghe was more or less a contemporary of the author's -- he became a member of the Societe Botanique de France in 1906). A card pocket and slip have been neatly removed from the rear endpapers; there are no other marks of ownership. The text is clean, the sewing tight. The author conducted extensive botanical explorations thoughout the Middle East in his youth. In 1903 Joseph Bornmüller was appointed curator of the "Haussknecht Herbarium" at Weimar, and maintained this position until 1938. The plant genus Bornmuellerantha from the family Scrophulariaceae is named for him.

8 Bridgeman, Thomas The Young Gardener's Assistant, in Three Parts, Containing Catalogues of Garden and Flower Seeds with Practical Directions Under Each Head for the Cultivation of Culinary Vegetables and Flowers; Also, directions for cultivating Fruit Trees, the Grape Vine, &c., to which is added A Calendar for Each Part ... the whole adapted to the United States
New York A. O. Moore (late C. M. Saxton Co.) 1858 Hardcover Very Good 8vo 8" - 9" tall
164, 189, 12 ads pages; Scattered light foxing, otherwise clean and secure in original green cloth binding with decorative stamping in blind to boards and in gilt at spine. Includes a section of growing grapes and domestic and foreign varietals for wine production. Thomas Bridgeman (1786 - 1850) was a florist and horticultural author born in Berkshire England. He emigrated to the United States in 1824, where he opened a seed store. Bridgeman authored several books, including The Young Gardener’s Assistant (1832); Florist’s Guide (1835); The Kitchen Gardener’s Instructor (1836); Report of the Committee On Horticulture (1844); The Fruit Cultivator’s Manual (1844); and The American Gardener’s Assistant (1867) (completed by his son, Alfred Bridgeman). The work offered here had many favorable reviews in contemporary journals including one written by Edgar Allan Poe : "We perceive by the advertisement in another column, that our friends Hirst and Dreer, have issued a very excellent work on the Kitchen Nursery, Fruit and Flower Garden, and other branches of the Farm department, called the YOUNG GARDINER’S ASSISTANT, by Thomas Bridgeman, of New York. It is for sale at their Seed store, No. 97 Chesnut street. Among other important matters it contains the celebrated discovery on “Terra-Culture,” as described in Senate Document No. 23, of the 3d Session of the 25th Congress, and therein estimated at hundreds of millions of day’s labor, and “worth more to the community than all the discoveries of the present age combined — the application of steam not excepted.” For the purchase of which secret an application has been made to the 26th Congress, by the discoverer, for a sum equal to five cents from each individual of the United States, or about a million dollars of our resources." (Alexander’s Weekly Messenger) . Other reviews follow: "The work is written in plain language, easily to be understood by the young beginner in gardening, who will find it a great help ; and its value, even to the experienced person, is by no means of an ordinary character. It Is Adapted To Our Climate and unlike compilations from English works, the novice is not led into disappointment by following the rules there laid down, as he generally is, when following the advice of the latter. (Magazine of Horticulture, Botany, &c, published by Hovey & Co., Boston) ; "No work ever published has been so studiously written to give plain useful information. By being arranged in the form of a catalogue, you can turn in a moment to any name you desire, where the time of sowing, depth, soil, after treatment, &c. &c, is clearly defined. The Calendarial Index, giving a summary of work for every month, is itself worth the whole price of the book, and must have cost the author much research and laborious thought. Mr. Bridgeman is not a theorist, but is in the daily practice of what he writes, and of course well qualified to direct all beginners in the profitable and delightful employment of cultivating a garden, 'a profession and an employment for which no man is too high or too low.' " (Genessee Farmer) ; "All those who are desirous of a work on the subject of Gardening, and one which will convey the best information on the management of Hotbeds, Asparagus beds, best mode of raising all sorts of Esculent Vegetables, Pruning, Grafting and Budding Fruit Trees, Training the Vine, Preserving the Fruit from Mildew, &c should procure this. No work on the subject ever published in this country has met with half as extensive a sale, or decided public approbation, as this valuable compendium. Mr. Bridgeman fully understands the subject on which he treats. The very rapid sale of the eight former editions is quite a sufficient recommendation."—G. C. Thorburn, in the Evening Star.

Flore des Tourbières du Département de la Somme par le Docteur Caussin, Caussin, Octave
13 Caussin, Octave Flore des Tourbières du Département de la Somme par le Docteur Caussin
Mayenne [France] Imprimerie Charles Colin 1912 First Edition Hardcover Very Good 8vo
301 + plates & map pages; Contemporary green cloth, red gilt-lettered label (rubbed and worn) mounted to the spine -- publisher's original printed front and rear wrappers retained and bound in. Binding shows some wear and toning, especially along the edges and the rear cover; internally, the book is nearly fine, apart from a small oval ink stain to the blank lower corner of the front wrapper. A decent copy of this rare study of the wetlands flora of the Somme, published just before the transformative horrors of one of the costliest battles of the first World War. The author, Arthur-Octave Caussin, was born in Proyart in 1862. He was a medical doctor, remembered for his effective struggles against typhus in Chaulnes, but his great passion was botany. Dr. Caussin died in 1913, the year after this last book of his was published. This volume is especially sought after today as a classic of the botany of wetlands and bogs of the Somme, in Northern France. Wetlands are delicate, by their very nature, and it has to be noted that just four years after this book was published, the whole region of the Somme was the sight of a horrible battle, starting on 1 July 1916 and lasting for 141 days, during which well over a million lives were lost. It is not difficult to imagine that some of the bogs and wetlands which the author knew and loved were trampled, drained, and treated in a manner no gardener might care to imagine. The book is now rare; OCLC Number: 17502551 locates only two copies [Lloyd Library & Museum in Cincinnati, Ohio; and Bibliothèque Nationale de France, in Paris]. Illustrated with a folding map (reproducing a hand-drawn and lettered map in "phototypie") and two full-page gravures from photographs, with tissue guards, at the end of the text.

NATURE'S OWN GARDENS, Clarke, Maud Umfreville
16 Clarke, Maud Umfreville NATURE'S OWN GARDENS
London, New York J.M. Dent & E.P. Dutton 1907 First Edition Hardcover Very Good 4to 11" - 13" tall
280 pages; Clean and tight in original pictorial cloth binding decoratively stamped at spine and front boardin green, white, red, gilt in a repeating floral pattern of blooming flowers and border vines. Minor rubbing at extremeties, some rippling of the cloth on rear boards. Beautifully illustrated with 51 full-page, colour drawings and numerous b&w drawings. Clarke presents her botanical musings for each month of the year. Excerpt: "When each and all of the Nature Gardens are so lovely in their particular way, it is unwise to show partiality; and yet there is something dangerously like it, if I say that the gardens of the grass fields in June seem to hold the largest possibilities of any ... The corn fields have their very definite beauty, but there is not the variety of plants growingamong the corn that the grass can muster. It seems such a perfectly content and satisfactory family, studding the green with all colours: white and yellow, orange, blue and pink of many shades. ... As the weeks of June add together, the flowers' strength and the strength of the grass seem to rise and swell into the fullest tide of the flowers' year." In addition to the lovely colour full page plates, many of the wide margins have reproductions of the author's pen-drawings to illuminate readers unfamiliar with the plants under discussion.
