DORA LEE or, The visit to Montpelier, A Lady of "Louise Home" Washington ; [Lucy Burwell Page Saunders]
1 A Lady of "Louise Home" Washington ; [Lucy Burwell Page Saunders] DORA LEE or, The visit to Montpelier
Baltimore Charles Harvey & Co. 1872 First Edition Hardcover Very Good 16mo 6" - 7" tall
83 pages; Former owner's name in pencil on ffep; tiny bookseller's label on fep - "J. & W.J. Entwisle Booksellers / 102 King Street / Alexandria" Clean and secure in original brown cloth binding with a blindstamped decorative border to both boards, gilt lettering at spine (rubbed). OCLC: 10945268 A very scarce juvenile book by a lady of the Old South; the story recollects life in Williamsburg in the very early 19th century during the Madison presidency. Dora, the little girl of the title receives a beautiful doll from her mother's friend Dolly Madison and there follows a visit to the Madison home Montpelier. The author Lucy Burwell Page Saunders (1808-1885) was the youngest daughter of Virginia Governor John Page and the poet, Margaret Lowther Page (1759-1835). Governor Page was a good friend of Thomas Jefferson from their college days and was also friends with the Madisons. The story is likely inspired by the Page family's visits to Montpelier. Lucy B. Page was married to Robert Saunders of Williamsburg, Virginia, a Professor of Mathematics at the College of William and Mary from 1833 until 1847 when he was appointed President of the College. During the Civil War the Saunders retreated from their Williamsburg mansion which was then occupied and plundered by McClellan's forces. Robert Saunders died in 1868. After her husband's death, Mrs. Saunders moved to Washington, D.C. where she resided in the Louise Home for Women, established by W.W. Corcoran for ladies who have seen better days. She was also the author of Leonora and the Ghost: A True Christmas Tale for Youth (OCLC: 20609293), published 4 years after this work.

A Philadelphie none listed 1823 First Edition Thus Hardcover Good 12mo
[4], iv, 112 pages; Contemporary, probably original binding: calf-backed marbled paper-covered boards. Significant wear to the binding, sewing compromised, considerable foxing throughout -- but a complete copy of this rare American edition of an Aesop's fables, in French quatrains. Title page states: "Nouvelle edition dédié a la jeunesse." There is a dedication (in verse quatrains) to youth, page [3], signed with initials at the bottom -- "F. M." ["A LA JEUNESSE"] The French text appears to the version of Jean-Baptiste Morvan de Bellegarde. The statement of a price in "sous" on the title page is odd, but one noted library holding a copy of this rare edition helps confirm that this "Philadelphie" stated in the imprint is the city in Pennsylvania; the American Antiquarian Society copy states in their catalogue entry: "Place: United States; Pennsylvania; Philadelphia." There are three OCLC numbers, but only six locations are scattered across the three accession numbers: Columbia, Dickinson College, Virginia Tech, Georgetown University, Millersville Univ., and AAS. See OCLC numbers: 1398897, 21709607, and 198424372. Who was F. M.? And, did the un-named Philadelphia printer or bookseller responsible for this charming book for young students of French accept 75 U.S. cents, rather than French "sous" for a copy? Given that 1 sous = 5 centimes and 1 livre, or franc = 20 sous, this 1823 price would not really make sense at 3 francs 15 sous, which would have been the price of a very expensive and luxurious volume, indeed. Keep in mind that Victor Hugo's 1830 'Les Misérables' informs us that "une flûte de pain" = 1 sou. Was this book really priced at an equivilent cost to 75 (wide) baguettes of bread? Perhaps our modern price is a bit low...

Nacht en Morgen en andere verhalen Door den hoofdredacteur van "De vriend van oud en jong", Anonymous
6 Anonymous Nacht en Morgen en andere verhalen Door den hoofdredacteur van "De vriend van oud en jong"
Leiden R. Fuik 1880 First Edition Hardcover Very Good 8vo
96 p., [2] bl. pages; Date is approximate. Publisher's brown cloth, covers decoratively stamped in blind and lettered in gilt. Colored frontispiece and three full page chromolithographed plates. (The frontispiece and the first of the plates are mounted on heavier coated paper stock; the first plate appears to have been mounted over another plate, of which just a tiny bit of the border is now visible). Very minor wear and rubbing to the spine ends, just a hint of cracking to the inner hinges, text paper is slightly toned thorughout, but a very good copy of this scarce Dutch book for children. Undated, but the OCLC description suggests a date in the 1880's, which seems entirely reasonable considering the appearance, materials and style of the book. [OCLC Number: 68943020. The only location cited is the University of Groningen Library(Bibliotheek Rijksuniversiteit Groningen - Netherlands) ]. As to the note on the title page identifiying the author as the hoofdredacteur van "De vriend van oud en jong" -- it is interesting to note that another Dutch book for children published by the same firm: 'Hoe Karel uit doodsgevaar gered werd : kerstverhaal voor de jeugd' has an OCLC entry with the following note: "P. Los Gzn. is den hoofdredacteur van 'De Vriend van Oud en Jong.' " Not in Brinkman [Catalogus der boek-, plaat en kaartwerken... precursor of the Dutch National Bibliography]. ; Experience the pleasure of reading and appreciating this actual printed item. It has its own physical history that imbues it with a character lacking in ephemeral electronic renderings.

The Children of the Bible, Armstrong, Fanny L.
12 Armstrong, Fanny L. The Children of the Bible
Nashville, Tenn Southern Methodist Publishing House, Printed for the Author 1880 First Edition; First Printing Hardcover Very Good+ 12mo
272 pages; Publisher's purple cloth, elaborate decorative stamping and lettering in black and gilt, pale yellow endpapers. This is a particularly interesting copy of the first edition of this children's book -- printed in Nashville, Tennessee at the end of the post-Civil War Reconstruction. This is the copyright deposit copy, with a blue-ink oval stamp on the title page: LIBRARY OF CONGRESS / COPYRIGHT / 1880 / City of Washington. The number "9082 82" is entered in pencil on the line supplied in the stamp, just about the 1880 date. Stamped over this official copyright accession stamp is the Surplus-Duplicate stamp of the Library of Congress (mid-20th century, in red ink). A slip of paper is tipped to the rear endpaper with a stamp reading "Y A C R 465." No other marks. A beautifully preserved copy; there is a faint fold to the corner of the front-free endpaper (no break or loss to the paper) and very faint sunning to the spine (much less than usual for purple, a notoriously fugitive color). This is now a rare book. OCLC 31343825 locates only a single copy of this 1880 first edition -- at the Harvard Divinity School Library; the Hollis online catalogue now locates the copy in the Andover-Harvard Depository - categorized as a "Brittle Book." The copy we offer here is very Nearly Fine, inside and out, with NO signs of brittleness at all. The Library of Congress has only electronic texts of this title, no physical copies of any of the three early editions. An interesting and important documentary copy of this book, which is luckily preserved in excellent condition.
