MILES ALDRIDGE - I Only Want You to Love Me, Aldridge, Miles
2 Aldridge, Miles MILES ALDRIDGE - I Only Want You to Love Me
New York Rizzoli 2013 0847840360 / 9780847840366 First Edition Hardcover Very Good 4to 11" - 13" tall
288 pages; Contents clean and tight in original bright colourful pictorial covers, upper corners mildly bumped. A fabulous book of photographs. The first monograph from the brilliant fashion photographer Miles Aldridge. With a cinematic approach to fashion photography, Miles Aldridge creates singular scenes with psychologically complex characters in surreal and fantastic settings. His brilliant, candy-colored images engage viewers with an appealing mix of overt sexuality and sweetness. No detail is left uncovered in his eye-popping, erotically charged fashion photographs, which transform slightly sordid scenarios into acid-hued glamour. Each photograph is a complex world unto itself, and these lush images invite viewers to linger, for there is always something else to see, some deeper layer of meaning to uncover.

4 Anonymous VELOX MANUAL [wrapper title]
NP (Nepera Division Eastman Kodak Co.) 1904 Revised Edition Paperback Near Fine 24mo
24 pages; Publisher's grey stiff paper wrappers, two metal staples at the spine. A trade catalogue for the important VELOX line of photographic "developing-out" paper, from 1904. There is an advertising page at the end which will interest historians of the post card... Velox photographic paper, designed to be printed from negatives exposed through artificial life was the invention of Leo Baekeland. The inventor was born in Belgium in 1863, came to the U.S. with his wife, became a citizen, and invented Velox paper in 1893. Nepera, the company founded to make Velox and its developing chemicals, aroused the interest of Eastman Kodak, seeking to control the marked for every end of the market connected to photography. There is a story which was told in the NY 'Times" obituary of George Eastman which paints a dramatic picture of how Velox came to be under the Kodak umbrella. This tales recounts a sudden change of heart, in which George Eastman, after initially declining to purchase the Velox company for its asking price of $100,000, telephoned Baekeland with a request that he take the train up to Rochester to resume talks. Eastman, or so the story goes, when Baekeland walked into his office the next moring, immediately made an offer of one million dollars for Velox, "not a penny more." The truth is more complex. After much negociation, Nepera and Velox were sold to a group mostly owned by George Eastman, and were part of a combination (or trust) designed to give Eastman control of the photographic paper business... in America, at least. This edition of the Velox manual has the statement in green ink on the verso of the cover: "Revised Dec. 1st 1904." The ads in the back have the most interesting information, including prices of all the Velox papers (both Regular and "Special") and their chemicals. At the foot of one page, there is a reference to "Nepera Division / Eastman Kodak Co., Rochester, N. Y. / Formerly Nepera Park." No other Kodak statements appear (unless one squints at the photograph of a box containing a bottle of Velox Liquid Developer, where the above information is repeated, next to the familiar Velox monogram-logo). But the crucial detail for this edition is page 22, entirely devoted to an ad for VELOX POST CARDS / Velvet or Special Portrait Surface. / "A New Field of Photographic Enjoyment." Post cards were developed initially in Europe. Images of various sorts quickly came to dominate the commercial sales of post cards, and photographic images were used in the U.S. for the new format, as early as the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. But the initial postal regulations demanded that one entirely plain surface of each card be devoted exclusively to the name and address of the recipient. Any message the sender cared to add to the card had to be written on the "image side." But postal authorities in England and Europe in 1903 began allowing a division of the address side of the card, with a message on the left half and the address confined to the right half. Eastman and his paper trust were among the most effective of the forces lobbying American postal authorities to join in this revolution in post card regulations, which would make the image ever so much more important and impactful. In this 1904 ad, the proprietors are clearly introducing the product to their clients for photographic papers. The wording makes it clear that it was deemed necessary to explain the concept: "You can print on these sensitized cards from / your own negatives, and send them through / the mails to your friends. / The surface is suitable for writing upon. / UNIQUE -- INTERESTING." A dozen cards, ready print out as photographic post cards were priced at 20 cents. A gross was available for $2.00. The explosion would come in 1907 when U.S. postal system allowed the new-fangled divided cards to be sent through the penny post, leaving the image undamaged by the temptation to write the message on its surface. This beautifully preserved copy of the late 1904 Velox Manual has the neatly written ink notation on the top margin of the cover -- "Latest" with initials and a date of 2/11/05. It has the printed identification of "Rousseau & Brown" (leading pharmacy in Woonsocket, Rhode Island) on the rear cover, in green ink to match the front cover. A scarce document of the incunabular period of the U.S. photographic post card. [P.S. Leo Baekeland took his share of Eastman's money, built a house, set up a lab, and, in 1907, came up with a new and interesting material -- an insoluble product of phenol and formaldehyde: polyoxybenzylmethylenglycolanhydride -- better known as "Bakelite" and thus began the age of plastics.] This 1904 edition of the Velox Manual is not in OCLC. [OCLC does cite one edition of the Velox Manual, in a single copy, at George Eastman House. This is 20 pp. and the publisher is attributed as "Nepara Chemical Company" so it probably is a few years earlier than our copy]

Lee was in the store when he received the orders to put down John Brown's raid in 1859. His son Edward S. Leadbeater took over in 1860. The Union-supporting family nearly lost their enterprise to the Confederates, but Alexandria was quickly occupied by Union troops, especially after the First Battle of Manassas. In 1852 when Leadbeater purchased the business from Stabler's widow, he changed the name from William Stabler Co. to John Leadbeater Co. E. S. Leadbeater & Bro. Apothecary also known as E.S. Leadbeater & Co. prior to 1869 and E.S. 6 Arnold, Lloyd R. ; [ Ernest Hemingway ] High on the Wild with Hemingway A Pictorial Recollection
Caldwell Caxton Printers 1968 1122326289 / 9781122326285 First Edition Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket 4to
343 pages; Clean and tight in original cloth binding with pictorial endpapers in bright fresh dustjacket (red NOT faded). A pictorial recollection of "Papa" Hemingway by a close friend and photographer. Spans the years from 1939 to 1961, highlighting Hemingway's time in Idaho. Lloyd "Pappy" Arnold was Sun Valley Resort's first official photographer. Averell Harriman, of the Union Pacific which owned the resort, lured Ernest Hemingway and his soon to be third wife Martha Gellhorn to visit Sun Valley in September 1939. "Pappy" Arnold was assigned to accompany Hemingway on hunting and fishing expeditions and other excursions in the area. Arnold, himself a serious outdoorsman, introduced Hemingway to another hunter Gene Van Guilder and to the area's best guide Taylor "Beartracks" Williams. Later (fall of 1941) Williams introduced Hemingway to the "Old Timer" who related to Hemingway and Arnold his numerous old tales of Custer's death at the Greasy Grass, and the Wagonbox fight where dozens of woodcutters fought two thousand Sioux. This book of wonderful photographs and vivid reminiscences is a well-spring for Hemingway enthusiasts.

Birthday Greetings to "Baby Clara" on Our Mutual Birthdays and a Tribute to Her Memory, E. A. W. [Ellie A. Webb?]
19 E. A. W. [Ellie A. Webb?] Birthday Greetings to "Baby Clara" on Our Mutual Birthdays and a Tribute to Her Memory
[Wilmington, Delaware] (from slug on verso of title) James & Webb 1876 Hardcover Very Good+ Large 8vo Illustrated by Original photograph
54 pages; Publisher's terra-cotta cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt: "The Birthday Picture" -- the front cover within an elaborate border executed in gilt and black. Edges of the covers beveled, all edges of the text-block gilt and polished. Beautifully preserved, in virtually unworn condition. There is some faint foxing to the endpapers, and the tissue guard protecting the photographic frontispiece. Original photograph mounted to the verso of the front blank leaf, cut oval and framed within a double-ruled border in red. Text printed in black, elegantly set throughout within an elaborate border printed in red. An explanatory note at the beginning states that the photograph was taken on the first birthday of the subject, "Baby Clara" -- who shared a birthday with the author: "E. A. W." There are three short texts within: "The Birthday Picture" - "Little Tot" - and "In Memoriam." Sadly, the text makes it clear that Baby Clara died before her third birthday. The text also states that the author was known to baby Clara as "Aunt Ellie." Some help comes from Brown University Library, who catalogue a copy of a related book in the University's Harris Collection of American Poetry. This was entitled: "The birthday picture : a greeting to "Baby Clara", on our mutual birthday, November 11th, 1874." The Brown University volume had no identification of publisher or place, but had 14 pp. [forty pages fewer than ours] and bore the title page date, "1874." This slimmer volume also had the photograph of Clara as frontispiece. The Brown cataloguer helpfully identifies the subject as "Clara L. James 1874 - 1876?". It is tempting to link her surname with the firm who published this handsome volume: James & Webb. There is useful information in an 1880 publication ["Industries of Delaware," Richard Edwards, Editor and Publisher, Wilmington, Delaware, 1880]. "JAMES & WEBB PRINTING AND STATIONERY CO., - 224 Market Street. (Wilmington) --- This company was organized in February, 1880, succeeding the firm of James & Webb, who were the successors of H. & E. F. James, the latter firm having established the business in 1866. The James & Webb Printing and Stationery Company are the largest and the only stationers in the city (probably in the State) who own and control their Printing Office, Book Bindery and Blank Book Manufactory. This house is not exceeded, and in but few instances equaled, in outfit of machinery, types, skillful workmen, &c., by any of the printing and stationery houses of the larger cities. They have nine Printing Presses, Ruling, Cutting and Bindery machinery, all driven by steam. They fill all orders for printing, large or small, rule paper and make blank books to order, of any desired pattern or size. They bind magazines or re-bind books, and supply missing numbers of all magazines. Their model store, elegantly fitted up for the display of their complete and handsome stock of Commercial and Fancy Stationery, embraces every article in this special line of trade; they fill orders all over the country and have a large trade with the metropolitan cities. This large establishment, with all its various branches, is carried on in one building and is conducted upon the strictest business principles, backed by large experience, integrity and promptness, thus insuring the lowest productive rates to their patrons, who are legion. Mr. E. F. James, the Secretary and Treasurer of this Company, is a thorough, accomplished business man, perfectly familiar with every department of this vast establishment, eminently popular with the trade and occupies a high social position in this community. The great success and preeminence of this house is due in a great measure to his efforts, and reflects credit upon all connected with it." The author's initials tempt one to associate her with the other half of this business, "Webb." Their is some confirmation of the idea that there was a social and well as business connection between the James and Webb families; the marriage records of New Castle, Delaware record that in 1881, one "Frank T. Webb" married "Anna M. James." Our volume, with its three parts occupying 54 pages, does not have a date. Also, it leaves the date of Clara's birth off "our" combined title page, which had been stated in the 14 page first part (only) in the Brown University collections. Some estimate is possible from the language of the printer's identification in small letters on the verso of our title page. Sharf's History of Delaware 1609-1888 has the following chronology of the firm: "PRINTING.—The firm of H. & E. F. James, composed of Hickman and Edward F. James, was established in 1867, at the present location of the Delaware Printing Company. After a few years Hickman James retired and Frank T. Webb took his place, the firm becoming James & Webb. The James & Webb Printing and Stationery Company, incorporated in 1883, purchased the plant and continued the business until October 5, 1888, when the present concern, the Delaware Printing Company, became the proprietors." This would imply that our volume was printed before 1883, as our title page verso states: "James & Webb Printers and Publishers / Wilmington, Delaware." At the very least, it should predate 1888, when the firm became known as "Delaware Printing Company." From the two texts about the James & Webb buesiness, it is clear that the concern had the resources to bring a book like ours from the design and compositing stage, right through to printing, sewing, binding, and retail sales -- all, in house. The details also help explain why our binding's title seems to match the title page of the earlier 14 pp. volume described by Brown University, as adapting a previous design to this (presumably) thicker volume would have been easy for the James & Webb staff. In any event, they produced a handsome and emotionally eloquent volume, which likely was a personal matter to the proprietors of this publication. The OCLC listing: 13484122 indicates a date of 1876; for the Brown University 1874 title, see OCLC Number: 13476454 [stating two locations, but the other copy is a microfilm of the Brown copy]. It is worth restating that, although this is a memorial volume, the photographic frontispiece depicts a live "Baby Clara" -- shown on her first birthday. [There were a number of memorial volumes published in the nineteenth century with photographs... taken retrospectively, to put it gently].
