MORAL CULTURE Choice and use of books : Cultivation of memory: from John Stuart Blackie's "Self-Culture", Blackie, John Stuart
2 Blackie, John Stuart MORAL CULTURE Choice and use of books : Cultivation of memory: from John Stuart Blackie's "Self-Culture"
New York Andrew J. Graham 1890 First Edition Hardcover Very Good- 12mo
1 p.l., 71 & iv (ads) pages; Publisher's dark brown cloth, front cover lettered in gilt within a framework of rules in blind, pale yellow endpapers. The title page states: "Engraved in the Advanced Corresponding Style of Standard Phonography, with a Key. Following the running title: "Moral Culture" at the head of page one, the text of pp. 1-39 is set throughout in shorthand letters. The system used is essentially Pitman shorthand, first introduced in 1837 by Sir Isaac Pitman, M.P., and improved many times since. Pitman's system uses a phonemic orthography. For this reason, it is sometimes known as phonography, (meaning 'sound writing' in Greek). Pages 41-71 are devoted to the "Key" set in standard English (with a phrase or two in Greek, befitting John Stuart Blackie's long tenure as Professor of Greek at Edinburgh University. Pitman shorthand was a standard system used world-wide when this small book was published. But two years earlier, in 1888, a new system of shorthand writting was invented by John Robert Gregg, with letters completely based on elliptical figures and lines that bisect them. Pitman uses line thickness and position to discriminate between two similar sounds, but Gregg shorthand uses the same thickness throughout and discriminates between similar sounds by the length of the stroke. This copy has a bold ownership signature on the front paste-down endpaper: "Francis O'Dwyer / Willimantic / Conn / Jan 11th 96." The binding shows very modest wear, mostly limited to rubbing along the hinges and fraying to the corners, with a spot of wax (?) at the lower corner of the front cover. Internally clean and sound. OCLC 16172394 - (apparently locating just the Library of Congress copy). Another edition was published under a title closer to Blackie's original text in Cincinnati, at the Phonographic Institute Co., 1902. ; Experience the pleasure of reading and appreciating this actual printed item. It has its own physical history that imbues it with a character lacking in ephemeral electronic renderings.

Gilt faded at spine, shallow chipping at head of spine, leather lightly rubbed along edges. Attractive engraved bookplate of Louise Thoron Endicott. Brief inscription on half-title to L.E.dated 1892. Sir Reginald Theodore Blomfield (20 December 1856 – 27 December 1942) was a prolific British architect, garden designer and author of the Victorian and Edwardian period. Blomfeld was an architect and proponent of formal landscape design. Formal gardens in England was his first book, beautifully illustrated by Inigo Thomas. Blomfield's advocacy of formal landscape design drew criticism from William Robinson (1838 – 1935), an Irish practical gardener and journalist whose ideas about wild gardening spurred the movement that evolved into the English cottage garden. Louise T. Endicott was born Louise Marie Thoron in New York on 26 November 1864. The daughter of a socially prominent New York family with strong Boston ties, she was educated in convent schools in the United States and France. She married William C. Endicott, Jr. in 1889.

NATURE'S OWN GARDENS, Clarke, Maud Umfreville
5 Clarke, Maud Umfreville NATURE'S OWN GARDENS
London, New York J.M. Dent & E.P. Dutton 1907 First Edition Hardcover Very Good 4to 11" - 13" tall
280 pages; Clean and tight in original pictorial cloth binding decoratively stamped at spine and front boardin green, white, red, gilt in a repeating floral pattern of blooming flowers and border vines. Minor rubbing at extremeties, some rippling of the cloth on rear boards. Beautifully illustrated with 51 full-page, colour drawings and numerous b&w drawings. Clarke presents her botanical musings for each month of the year. Excerpt: "When each and all of the Nature Gardens are so lovely in their particular way, it is unwise to show partiality; and yet there is something dangerously like it, if I say that the gardens of the grass fields in June seem to hold the largest possibilities of any ... The corn fields have their very definite beauty, but there is not the variety of plants growingamong the corn that the grass can muster. It seems such a perfectly content and satisfactory family, studding the green with all colours: white and yellow, orange, blue and pink of many shades. ... As the weeks of June add together, the flowers' strength and the strength of the grass seem to rise and swell into the fullest tide of the flowers' year." In addition to the lovely colour full page plates, many of the wide margins have reproductions of the author's pen-drawings to illuminate readers unfamiliar with the plants under discussion.

8 Eklin, Salomon Instrumenta Graecorum Rustica ex Hesiodo illustrata adprob. ampl. ord. philos. in reg. academ. Upsal. praeside mag. Johanne Flodero ... pro gradu publico examini tradit Salomon Eklin
Upsaliæ [Uppsala, Sweden] apud Joh. Edman 1779 First Edition Softcover Very Good- Small 4to
[2], 20 & [1, engraved plate] pages; Instrumenta Graecorum rustica ex Hesiodo illustrata, adprob. ampl. ord. philos. in reg. academ. Upsal. praeside mag. Johanne Flodero ... pro gradu publico examini tradit Salomon Eklin, stip. reg. Wexionia-Smolandus, in audit. Gustav. maj. d. V. Maji MDCCLXXIX. Horis ante meridiem solitis. Small 4to. A rare dissertation, stiched and sewn as issued, never bound. With the engraved plate depicting Greek farm implements, with a printed legend recording names [in Greek letters] for 11 parts of these tools. Faint circular stain to the front cover, minor scrappyness to the uncut edges -- with trimming to the lower part of the gutter margin of the plate, to enable this leaf, slighlty larger than the text, to be folded. This disseration was defended by Salomon Eklin [1756-1803]. The thesis advisor was Johan Floderus [1721-1789], who spent most of his life at the University at Uppsala. Floderus was first a student at Uppsala in 1738, became Master of Arts there in 1743, he was appointed in 1752 to associate professor in Greek literature. Five years later he was promoted to lecturer in 1762 and to full professor in Greek. He was appointed in the year of this academic thesis, 1779, Vicar of Old Uppsala , and was named in 1786 as a member of the Academy of Letters. Several Library catalogues list him, mistakenly, as the author of this thesis; Swedish Wikipedia states that he "Presided" over 153 academic dissertations. Interestingly, RISM, the "Répertoire international des sources musicales" suggests that Salomon Eklin was also a Swedish composer of music. OCLC lists only one location [see OCLC Number: 249958845 -- copy at Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin]. COPAC locates only the British Library copy. There appear to be four copies in Swedish institutions, and a copy at Helsinki University. While OCLC suggests that there are none in the U.S., Harvard's Houghton Library has a copy in a bound volume of 38 dissertations.

His continuing interest in fruit trees and other plants, leading to his experimentation with improved techniques to espalier and prune them. Schabol reputation as a skilled gardener spread, gaining him entree to wealthy circles in Paris and her environs.
