CELEBRATED TRIALS AND REMARKABLE CASES OF CRIMINAL JURISPRUDENCE, From The Earliest Records To The Year 1825 [Six Volume Set], Borrow, George H.
7 Borrow, George H. CELEBRATED TRIALS AND REMARKABLE CASES OF CRIMINAL JURISPRUDENCE, From The Earliest Records To The Year 1825 [Six Volume Set]
London Knight And Lacey 1825 First Edition Leather Bound Very Good+ 8vo
Clean and tight in lovely 19th century bindings of tan calf over marbled boards with leather title labels at spines in red and green with gilt lettering; raised bands and extensive gilt decoration at spines with armorial bookplate with coat of arms of John Croft Deverell to paste downs. Quite scarce as a complete set, particularly in this condition. George H. Borrow's first published work. Illustrations include portraits, courtroom scenes and a plan of a murder scene. Contents include accounts of many notable trials at Newgate between the years 1806 and 1825; charges include murder, fortune telling, etc. In April 1824, George Borrow, age 23, arrived in London to pursue his literary career. The publisher Richard Phillips proposed that Borrow compile a book for him: "... you could earn more money for me, sir, and consequently for yourself, by a compilation of Newgate lives and trials. [Lavengro, p. 204] The work was the set offerred here: Celebrated Trials, and Remarkable Cases of Criminal Jurisprudence, from the earliest records to the year 1825. Borrow, despitesome hesitation enjoyed the project: "Of all my occupations at this period I am free to confess I liked that of compiling the Newgate Lives and Trials the best; that is, after I had surmounted a kind of prejudice which I originally entertained [Lavengro, p. 216] As he said of the various accounts: "What struck me most with respect to these lives was the art which the writers, whoever they were, possessed of telling a plain story. It is no easy thing to tell a story plainly and distinctly by mouth; but to tell one on paper is difficult indeed, so many snares lie in the way. People are afraid to put down what is common on paper, they seek to embellish their narratives, as they think, by philosophic speculations and reflections; they are anxious to shine, and people who are anxious to shine can never tell a plain story." [Lavengro, p. 217] In the Lavengro account, it appears that ironically George Borrow didn’t make a profit on the the Celebrated Trials, but only covered his expenses. GOLDEN TIPS - A Description of Ceylon and its Great Tea Industry, Cave, Henry W.
10 Cave, Henry W. GOLDEN TIPS - A Description of Ceylon and its Great Tea Industry
London Samson Low Marston & Company 1900 First Edition; First Printing Hardcover Near Fine 8vo
xii, 474 & [1, ad] pages; Publisher's cream cloth, blocked and stamped in gilt in an elaborate all-over pattern of leaves, slate grey endpapers, all edges gilt. A wonderful copy of the first edition of a handsome book -- of interest both for its subject: tea and its plantations, and the setting: Ceylon, now known as Sri Lanka. A particularly well-preserved copy, with an inscription in ink on the verso of the front free endpaper: "For Annie G. Mawle / a present from / the Author's Sister." The spine is bright and shows neither toning nor fading, the endpapers are clean and fresh, with perfect hinges. The only minor way in which this wonderful copy falls short of perfection is in a couple of narrow bands of very light rubbing to the gilt stamping on the boards (one near the top of the rear cover, and another, even fainter, at the corresponding top of the front cover). Henry William Cave came out to Ceylon from England in 1872 as secretary to the Anglican Archbishop of Colombo, Reginald Coppleston. With some help from his first employer, the author founded H. W. Cave & Co. in Columbo in 1876, when he was 22 years old. Initially, Cave's business engaged in bookselling, particularly supplying books to the tea planters in Ceylon. Henry Cave became a sought after commercial photographer, and then a publisher, and set up one of the most modern printing presses in the subcontinent. He also wrote a number of books about Ceylon (see the interesting ad at the rear of this volume for details of four titles -- there were more, eventually). His firm diversified into musical instruments, sporting goods -- including rickshaws, billiard-tables and bicycles. Eventually, Cave had a motor department, and probably offered motorcycles, as well. The economic impetus for all this development derived from the vast tea business, so well described in this lovely volume.; Signed by Family Member

14 Eklin, Salomon Instrumenta Graecorum Rustica ex Hesiodo illustrata adprob. ampl. ord. philos. in reg. academ. Upsal. praeside mag. Johanne Flodero ... pro gradu publico examini tradit Salomon Eklin
Upsaliæ [Uppsala, Sweden] apud Joh. Edman 1779 First Edition Softcover Very Good- Small 4to
[2], 20 & [1, engraved plate] pages; Instrumenta Graecorum rustica ex Hesiodo illustrata, adprob. ampl. ord. philos. in reg. academ. Upsal. praeside mag. Johanne Flodero ... pro gradu publico examini tradit Salomon Eklin, stip. reg. Wexionia-Smolandus, in audit. Gustav. maj. d. V. Maji MDCCLXXIX. Horis ante meridiem solitis. Small 4to. A rare dissertation, stiched and sewn as issued, never bound. With the engraved plate depicting Greek farm implements, with a printed legend recording names [in Greek letters] for 11 parts of these tools. Faint circular stain to the front cover, minor scrappyness to the uncut edges -- with trimming to the lower part of the gutter margin of the plate, to enable this leaf, slighlty larger than the text, to be folded. This disseration was defended by Salomon Eklin [1756-1803]. The thesis advisor was Johan Floderus [1721-1789], who spent most of his life at the University at Uppsala. Floderus was first a student at Uppsala in 1738, became Master of Arts there in 1743, he was appointed in 1752 to associate professor in Greek literature. Five years later he was promoted to lecturer in 1762 and to full professor in Greek. He was appointed in the year of this academic thesis, 1779, Vicar of Old Uppsala , and was named in 1786 as a member of the Academy of Letters. Several Library catalogues list him, mistakenly, as the author of this thesis; Swedish Wikipedia states that he "Presided" over 153 academic dissertations. Interestingly, RISM, the "Répertoire international des sources musicales" suggests that Salomon Eklin was also a Swedish composer of music. OCLC lists only one location [see OCLC Number: 249958845 -- copy at Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin]. COPAC locates only the British Library copy. There appear to be four copies in Swedish institutions, and a copy at Helsinki University. While OCLC suggests that there are none in the U.S., Harvard's Houghton Library has a copy in a bound volume of 38 dissertations.

THE CONSTITUTION That Delicate Balance Landmark Cases that Shaped the Constitution, Friendly, Fred W. ; & Martha J.H. Elliott ; [Justice Potter Stewart 's copy]
15 Friendly, Fred W. ; & Martha J.H. Elliott ; [Justice Potter Stewart 's copy] THE CONSTITUTION That Delicate Balance Landmark Cases that Shaped the Constitution
New York Random House 1984 0394540743 / 9780394540740 First Edition Hardcover Very Good in Very Good dust jacket 8vo
Autograph; 339 pages; Inscribed by Friendly and Signed by both authors on the titlepage to Mrs. Potter Stewart and Justice Potter Stewart to whome the book is dedicated. The printed dedication reads: "To Potter Stewart, who has taught us / '...what the British Crown had feared -- / and what the American Founders decided to risk.'" Clean and tight in original binding in very good dustjacket, slight lean to binding. From the collection of Justice Potter Stewart who served as a Justice on the U.S. Supreme Court for nearly 24 years. In 1958, President Dwight D. Eisenhower nominated Potter Stewart to the Supreme Court to replace Justice Harold Hitz Burton, who was retiring. Stewart served on the Supreme Court until he announced his retirement from the Court on June 18, 1981 at the age of 66. During his tenure (1958-1981) as an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court, Potter Stewart made major contributions to criminal justice reform, civil rights, access to the courts, and Fourth Amendment jurisprudence. Stewart leaned toward moderate, pragmatic positions, but was often in the position of dissenting during his time on the Warren Court. Stewart's philosophy might be most coherently traced to Justice Robert Jackson, about whom Stewart said: "He saw that 'judicial activism' could be a deadening and stultifying force... that every coercive and centralizing court decision deals a blow ... to the ability and then to the will of the democratic process to operate with responsibility and vigor." ; Signed by All Authors

Transformation Or, the Romance of Monte-Beni, Hawthorne, Nathaniel
18 Hawthorne, Nathaniel Transformation Or, the Romance of Monte-Beni
Leipzig Bernard Tauchnitz 1860 Hardcover Near Fine in Very Good- dust jacket 12mo
60 mounted albumen photographs; xii, 292; xi, 280 & [1] pages; Two volumes bound in one. Contemporary full vellum, with elaborate gilt-stamped decorations, title stamped in gilt: "THE MARBLE FAUN" (using the American title of Hawthorne's novel, rather than the British title "Transformation" which had also been adopted for this Tauchnitz edition. Pattern printed mounted silk endpapers, edges of the leaves decoratively stained red. The vellum and its gilt-stamping have been marvelously preserved in original freshness by a red fabric dust jacket, lined with paper. This scarce dust jacket does display some wear, with a few spots to the spine, some fraying at the spine ends and two short splits. But it has done its principal job well and the vellum binding is nearly as clean and crisp as new. (There are two tiny 1mm. splits to the rear cap of the spine). Many bibliographical sources have written about the cottage industry which grew up around the sale of copies of this Tauchnitz edition of Hawthorne's novel, handsomely bound and extra-illustrated with original albumen print photographic plates. Professor William B. Todd, in the majesterial history of the Tauchnitz International Editions in English [published with Anne Bowden] states that The Marble Faun / Transformation: "as a useful guide to Rome, is the Tauchnitz book most often found extensively extra-illustrated with photographs and bound in elaborately decorated vellum." This extraordinarly copy has 60 photographs, each mounted to a plain sheet and bound in with the text, including a photographic portrait of Nathaniel Hawthorne as frontispiece facing the first title page. As usual, many depict statues and paintings (referred to in the text), but a great number are street scenes around Rome, many with people shown. Professor Todd also asserts that the "Italian binders in this process habitually deletd half-titles." Indeed, this copy has no half titles, and only the final colophon leaf has survived, with the usual statement: PRINTING OFFICE OF THE PUBLISHER. Although Todd notes that all copies retained the 1860 date on the title page, there appear to have been four settings of the type. This copy corresponds to Todd's setting "D" - impression "b." It has more photographs than the typical copy (although copies are known with just over 100 photographs) but what makes it very special is the apparently original dust jacket, which has preserved the binding in nearly perfect original freshness and beauty. The dust jacket has caused a slight fading to the edges of the endpapers in which it has been in contact for over a hundred years. As a demonstration of the highly variable number of photographs in these Tauchnitz editions of Hawthorne's "Transformation" - we can offer another copy, bound in two vellum volumes, with only a single photograph inserted. See our listings elsewhere, or our firm's website. Volumes 515 and 516 in the Tauchnitz series. ; Experience the pleasure of reading and appreciating this actual printed item. It has its own physical history that imbues it with a character lacking in ephemeral electronic renderings.

19 Hedin, Sven Transhimalaja - Entdeckungen und Abenteuer in Tibet
Leipzig F. A. Brockhaus 1909 First Edition; First Printing Hardcover Very Good 8vo
xviii & 405; x & 406 pages; Publisher's bindings: tan canvas-like cloth, spines and front covers boldly lettered in black, with color pictorial paper decorative onlays mounted to the front covers, medium brown endpapers with a Tibetan text. Each rear paste-down endpaper has a folding map tipped to the gutter edge. Too heavy for overseas shipping. This attractive two volume set represents the first German edition of this classic of modern exploration. Volumes I and II are each first printings. A third volume which was eventually added to the work several years later (1912), but that is not offerred here. Sven Hedin's importance can barely be overstated. During four expeditions to Central Asia he discovered the Transhimalaya (once named the Hedin Range in his honor). The present two volume work is the account of Hedin's third Central Asian expedition. Between 1905 and 1908 he investigated the Central Persian desert basins, and the western highlands of Tibet and the Transhimalaya. He visited the 9th Panchen Lama in the cloister city of Tashilhunpo in Shigatse. Sven Hedin was the first European to reach the Kailash region, the sacred Lake Manasarovar and the sacred Mount Kailash - the midpoint of the earth according to Buddhist and Hindu mythology. The most important goal of the expedition was the search for the sources of the Indus and Brahmaputra Rivers, both of which Hedin found. The German editions of Hedin's books were published nearly simulaneously with Hedin's Swedish texts. The F. A. Brockhaus editions were produced to very high standards, and were certainly the main driver's of Hedin's international fame. The explorer also was a close personal friend of publisher Albert Brockhaus. Their correspondence is preserved in the Riksarkivet in Stockholm, and a selection of these letters was published in 1942 [Sven Hedin, Albert Brockhaus: "Sven Hedin und Albert Brockhaus. Eine Freundschaft in Briefen zwischen Autor und Verleger". F. A. Brockhaus, Leipzig 1942]. A well preserved set, lacking the dust jackets, with light rubbing at the spine ends, slight sun-fading to the spines (which also exhibit a few small spots of foxing). The rear inner hinge of the second volume is just starting to crack; the other hinges are quite sound. A few leaves show light, scattered foxing (especially where the text and the plates are adjacent). The plates, including the folding plates, and the two folding maps tipped to the rear endpapers are in excellent condition. ; Experience the pleasure of reading and appreciating this actual printed item. It has its own physical history that imbues it with a character lacking in ephemeral electronic renderings.
