5 Areco, Victor Das Liebesleben der Zigeuner
Leipzig Leipziger Verlag G.m.b.H. 1912 First Edition Hardcover Very Good- 8vo
xv, 367 pp. pages; Publisher's pattern printed paper-covered boards backed with brown cloth lettered in gilt. OCLC: 248446076 A sound copy internally, the spine is clean and presents a nice appearance on the shelf, but there is rubbing and wear to the edges of the boards. An interesting anthropological study of the gypsy, published as part of the series: "Das Liebesleben aller Zeiten und Voelker" (Band III). Published without a date specified in the years just before the first World War. [Booksellers who date this 1905 have merely pulled that date from the stern inscription which appears on the first leaf after the title page, from the Statistisches Landesbureau fuer Ungarn. Victor Areco claims in his preface that his study resulted from extensive fieldwork, vast personal experience and wide reading by the author in all the available gypsy literature. He writes of the sex lives, habits, practices and appearance of the Romani. Areco is almost rhapsodic in describing the magical allure of gypsy women (but he does state that there is a certain age at which these powers diminish starkly. ; Experience the pleasure of reading and appreciating this actual printed item. 10 Baumgarten, Paul Maria ; et al DER VATIKAN Süddeutsche Monatshefte. März 1917, 14. Jahrgang, Heft 6
Leipzig & Munich Süddeutsche Monatshefte 1917 First Edition Softcover Very Good- 8vo
200 pages; Special Vatican number of the periodical Süddeutsche Monatshefte, published during the first World War in 1917. Pagination: 657-840 & xviii & [2, ads]. OCLC: 248998565 Includes some specific material related to the on-going WWI - including an interesting article by the Catholic convert Theodor Freiherr von Cramer-Klett, Jr. He was the son of one of the great industrialists of Germany, who was appointed Secret Papal Chamberlain - [Päpstlichen Geheimkämmerer]. He eventually lost much of his fortune in the hyperinflation following the war. There is also an article: "Vatikan und Loge im Weltkrieg by Heinz Brauweiler, and an unsigned editorial piece at the end devoted to "Deutschland und Amerika." This last is poignant from the German point of view, as America's dramatic entry into the first World War on the Allied side took place within days [April 6, 1917] and was ultimately decisive. The wrappers are worn, with some edge and spine chipping, but the splendid full page illustrated ad for Benz Automobile und Flugmotoren on the rear cover is a strong image, showing the Benz automobile (9 years before the merger with Benz's competitor Daimler, which produced the Mercedes-Benz) driving on a winding road down from a Castle, with a Benz-powered biplane flying overhead. ; Experience the pleasure of reading and appreciating this actual printed item. Beiträge zur Kenntnis des Sulfitzellstoff-Verfahrens, Bergson, Carl Rud[olf].
11 Bergson, Carl Rud[olf]. Beiträge zur Kenntnis des Sulfitzellstoff-Verfahrens
Biberach an der Riss [Germany] Güntter-Staib Verlag 1937 First Edition Hardcover Very Good 8vo
viii & 61 pages; Publisher's tan cloth, front cover and spine lettered in white (in Roman letters). A clean copy. There is a typewritten slip mounted with clear tape to the front free endpaper: "This Book is Evidence in the Case Entitled / Rudolf Weiler, WAS / ESPIONAGE* G / BUREAU FILE 100-41401 / Do not damage or destroy." The same free endpaper is signed "Rudolf Weiler" in ink at the head. Also stamped across this leaf, partially affecting the typewritten slip is the red ink Library of Congress Surplus-Duplicate stamp. [Printed books and pamphlets from various Government properties and agencies was routed through the Library of Congress for de-accessioning. We cannot explain why this standard volume on the sulfite process for turning wood into pulp for papermaking might have been evidence in an espionage case. The chemical sulfite process was relatively mature technology, having been commercially developed in Sweden back in the 1890's. As it happened, an alternate process, the Kraft process would largely supercede the sulfite process for commercial purposes. Text in German, several photographic illustrations in b/w halftones.

Grundriss der griechischen Litteratur mit einem vergleichenden Ueberblick der Römischen - Two Volumes, Bernhardy, Gottfried
12 Bernhardy, Gottfried Grundriss der griechischen Litteratur mit einem vergleichenden Ueberblick der Römischen - Two Volumes
Halle Eduard Anton 1836 First Edition Hardcover Very Good 8vo
530; xxiv, 1072 pages; 1836/1845 Two volumes, bound in contemporary (publisher's?) black pebbled boards backed with brown ribbed cloth -- titles lettered in gilt on the spines along with thick gilt rules dividing the spines into panels. Edges of the leaves sprinkled red. Moderate shelfwear, scattered foxing (mostly to the first and last leaves of each volume), but an attractive and sound set of the scarce first edition of this standard work. The two volumes are described as: "1.Th. Innere Geschichte der Litteratur.--2.Th. Geschichte der griechischen Poesie." The second volume was published in 1845, nine years after the first appeared in 1836. The bulk of the second volume (with xxiv & 1072 pages) is about twice that of the first volume -- although the present set is bound in two volumes, it is sometimes found divided into three. Bernhardy, who was one of the final survivors of the school of Friedrich August Wolf, lived until 1875, and new editions of this important work were published throughout the nineteenth century. This first edition of the Grundriss der griechischen Litteratur is a landmark in the transformation in classical scholarship effected by the German scholars of the nineteenth century. J. E. Sandys stated that [it] "deserved to be remembered with respect, ... as the first to set a distinctly higher standard of what is meant by the History of Literature." Scarce -- see OCLC: 13088239 (9 locations). ; Experience the pleasure of reading and appreciating this actual printed item. It has its own physical history that imbues it with a character lacking in ephemeral electronic renderings.

15 Bitterlich, Roswitha Mit Roswitha ins Märchenland. Bilder und Verse der jugendl. Künstlerin Roswitha Bitterlich Märchen von Maria Berg. No.4, Bändchen 1
Rosenheim [Germany] Berchtenbreiter [1935] First Edition; First Printing Hardcover Very Good 24mo
Unpaginated pages; Publisher's boards -- pale green with a textured "grain" -- lettered in German script. A well preserved copy of this fragile booklet, showing just a touch of wear along the spine and at the points of the corners, and a faint bit of toning around the edges of the boards. Fine and fresh inside, unmarked, with the original plain endpapers intact. Printed on stiff card stock, in fraktur type, with 10 color plates by the young artist Roswitha Bitterlich [born in 1920]. This is the first part of the fourth series of Roswitha Bitterlich's wonderful illustrated "Mit Roswitha ins Märchenland" [With Roswitha to Fairyland]. Between the ages of three and six, Roswitha is reported to have painted her first pictures, cut silhouettes, and finished a six-meter long fresco in her nursury. In 1932 she painted a miniature book for her brother, and had her first exhibition that same year in Innsbruck. The charming illustrated books followed, and her fame spread from Europe to London, where she had a show in 1938 (this London exhibition received a notice in 'Time' magazine which first brought her attention in the U.S.) The verso of the last leaf of this unpaginated small book has a list of other publications by Roswitha Bitterlich (seven items, including the "No. 4, Bd. 2" of the present work -- "Mit Roswitha ins Märchenland" -- priced at RM 1.30). The works and their prices make it abundantly clear that this volume dates from the mid 1930's rather than the post-war era. For the sake of identification (since the covers of this fourth series look alike) the text begins with the first illustration, titled: "Beim Mondenschein." See OCLC Number: 64471208.

Erzählung eines Lebens, Blei, Franz
16 Blei, Franz Erzählung eines Lebens
Leipzig Paul List Verlag 1930 First Edition; First Printing Hardcover Very Good- 8vo
496 & [2] pages; Publisher's pale green flexible cloth, title stamped in gilt and red on the spine, facsimile of the author's signature in gilt on the front cover. The covers are somewhat soiled, and the spine has faded from pale green to tan; minor wear to the upper corner, and top of the front outer hinge. Internally clean, tight and unmarked. Frontispiece portrait of the author, from a photograph. Franz Blei [1871-1942] was an essayist, playwright and translator -- originally from Vienna. As a man of letters, he translated works by Walt Whitman, Oscar Wilde and Molière (among others) into German. He was the editor of the significant periodicals 'Amethyst,' 'Opals,' -- and the short-lived 'Hyperion' -- which has the distinction of being the first to publish work by a young Franz Kafka, in 1908 [ Betrachtung (Contemplation)]. Franz Blei became a friend of Kafka's, who latter said: "Franz Blei is much cleverer, and greater, than what he writes." [See "Conversations with Kafka, 1971]. Alas, the sickly Kafka died in 1924, six years before Blei published these memoirs, which might have altered this opinion. In addition to Kafka scholars, this book should interest readers who care deeply about Aubrey Beardsley and Felicien Rops, and writers like Carl Einstein (whose remarkable expressionist novel "Bebuquin" was first published in the pages of Franz Blei's 'Opals.') Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Andre Gide, and Robert Musil.

Schreiben des Herrn Ignatz von Born ... an Herrn Franz Grafen von Kinsky ... ueber einen ausgebrannten Vulkan bey der Stadt Eger in Böhmen, Born, Ignaz von
18 Born, Ignaz von Schreiben des Herrn Ignatz von Born ... an Herrn Franz Grafen von Kinsky ... ueber einen ausgebrannten Vulkan bey der Stadt Eger in Böhmen
Prag [Prague] bey Wolfgang Gerle, 1773 First Edition Softcover Very Good- Small 4to
16 pages; Unbound (possibly extracted from a volume). Very light soiling to the title page and final page. Ignaz von Born [1742-1791] was a mineralogist and metallurgist, who became a significant figure in botany, and other branches of natural history. He was also a prominent freemason, (whose writing influenced Mozart, both as a mason, and as a major source for the structure and intellectual foundations of "The Magic Flute." Indeed, some writers suggest that Born was the inspiration for the role of Sarastro). Born was also a satirist, and an influential anti-clerical writer. Wikipedia calls Born "the leading scientist in the Holy Roman Empire during the 1770s in the age of Enlightenment." He was born into a noble family, in the Grand Principality of Transylvania. He was educated in a Jesuit college in Vienna, but left the Jesuits after sixteen months to study law at Prague University. After extensive travels to study mineralogy throughout Germany, the Netherlands and France, and a second trip through Hungary and Transylvania, he returned to Prague in 1770 entered the department of mines and the mint. At Prague, where he held a post as mining councillor, Born was active among the founders of a scientific society. In 1771, Born was elected a foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (which he mentions on the title page to the work offered here). In 1776 he was summoned to Vienna by the Empress Maria Theresa to arrange the natural history collections, which he afterwards described in a superb (and expensive) book -- ['Testacea Musei Caesarei Vindobonensis' 1780]. Despite all this activity, Ignaz von Born remained an active and important force in mineralogy and the cutting edge methods of mining and metalurgy. His last work was an important contribution, detailing his invention of an amalgamation process for removing gold and silver from various ores, without the expensive and dangerous necessity for melting down the ores -- ['Ueber das Anquicken der gold- und silberhältigen Erze ...' 1786]. His avid pursuit of knowledge in the field may have been a contributing factor to his death at a relatively young age. The DSB states that "During his visit to a mine at Felso-Banya, he descended into the mine too soon after fires used to detach the ore had been extinguished, and inhaled a dangerously large quantity of arsenical vapors" Conspiracy-minded modern writers, knowing that Ignaz von Born was one of the most important members of the Illuminati in Vienna, may have other interpretations of Born's demise. Poggendorff i, col. 242; DSB ii, 316. The present work is quite scarce. See OCLC Number: 77229735 -- [specifying six locations, only one (University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign) in the USA. There are also copies in the British Library, and in the Library of the Univ. of Basel, under separate OCLC numbers. Bornite, a sulfide mineral also known as peacock ore, is named in his honor.

Wien [Vienna] Hölder 1898 First Edition Hardcover Very Good 8vo
544-655 pages; Contemporary binding: plum colored pebble-grained cloth over pattern printed boards, plain endpapers -- leaves unopened at the top edges, others trimmed rough. This is just the 112 page monograph by Bornmüller, (with a 2- leaf unopened bifolium at the front, and one extra page (i.e., pp. 541-543 at the front, and p. 656) at the rear, so that the important text of Bornmüller's Flora of Syria would be preserved complete. This is the original printing, not to be confused with any of several modern productions. There are no plates or illustrations. On the "extra" first page (541), there is a circular blindstamp of Herman Knoghe, a botanist with the Institut de Botanique, Montpellier -- (Knoghe was more or less a contemporary of the author's -- he became a member of the Societe Botanique de France in 1906). A card pocket and slip have been neatly removed from the rear endpapers; there are no other marks of ownership. The text is clean, the sewing tight. The author conducted extensive botanical explorations thoughout the Middle East in his youth. In 1903 Joseph Bornmüller was appointed curator of the "Haussknecht Herbarium" at Weimar, and maintained this position until 1938. The plant genus Bornmuellerantha from the family Scrophulariaceae is named for him.
