 2. Trollope, Anthony  ORLEY FARM - Two Volumes
London Chapman & Hall 1862 First Edition Hardcover Very Good
; Recased in original cloth -- new endpapers. Sadleir 13 -- mixed issues, Vol I has earliest form of title page, but otherwise fourth issue, Vol II probably second issue. A complex book, partly because volume I was published December 3, 1861, and volume II was not published until September 25, 1862. This set doesn't perfectly match any of Sadleir's issues. Volume I has some sheets showing stab marks, associated with the presumed earliest sets, which were made up from the parts. It also has the earliest form of the Clowes firm's imprint at the foot of the verso of the title page -- ["D (1) " rather than "H"] -- but the illustrations are arranged in the later manner, with "And then they all marched out of the room, .." facing page 73. Also, the comma following the word "room" in the underline title to this plate does appear -- (it evidently disappears and reappears) . Volume II has all the early points but seems to have few, if any, stab marks -- and so seems to correspond with Sadleir's second issue. It does have the earlier form of the last entry on the list of plates, the proper form and state of unbroken type in the Clowes imprints, and the vertical grain to the cloth of the binding. Neither volume has ads -- but even Sadleir states that this fact has "even less than its usual meaning. " The expensive Bradley Martin copy does not have ads, either. Illustrated by 40 wood-engravings.
