| 4. | Waugh, Evelyn THE LOVED ONE - An Anglo-American Tragedy Boston Little, Brown 1948 First Edition Hardcover Near Fine in Very Good+ dustjacket 8vo; Published June, 1948. Lavender cloth binding - Near Fine in UNclipped dustjacket with some wear at lower edge of rear panel and upper edge of interior front flap. Captures the essence of of Waugh's black humour. This satire lampoons the mortuary business in Southern California with additional jabs at capitalism, sex, religion, Hollywood, and other sacred cows. This excellent novel was the basis for the truly sublime movie directed by Tony Richardson with Jonathan Winters (as Wilbur and Harry Glenworthy), Rod Steiger, Robert Morse, and Anjanette Comer with Liberace as a coffin salesman, Allyene Gibbons as Mr. Joyboy's 800 pound mother, Sir John Gielgud and Robert Morley. With cameo appearances by James Coburn, Milton Berle, Tab Hunter, Dana Andrews, Roddy McDowall, and Margaret Leighton. All are entangled in the operations of Whispering Glades cemetery and its affiliated pet cemetery, the Happier Hunting Grounds. Frankly, my favorite comedy of all time. Price: 99.95 USD | See Full Description |
