London John Churchill & Sons 1865 Third Edition Hardcover Very Good+
8vo; Mentone, the Riviera, Corsica, Sicily, and Biarritz, As Winter Climates. Bennet was a London medical doctor who visited Mentone for a winter rest cure. The first edition of this work was an essay on the winter climate and vegetation of the Mentone area. By this third edition, Bennet has greatly expanded the work covering six winters spent at the various destinations augmented with meteorological tables, temperature charts, and an index. Four colour maps (2 folding) - Sicily, Corsica, Mentone and Southern Europe - by Mr. Stanford of Charing Cross. Sixteen wood engravings by Butterworth and Heath, mostly taken from photographs by Davenne. Minor rubbing on rear board. Original green cloth with gilt lettering at spine and gilt image of a bird in flight on front cover. Pale yellow endpapers, unmarked.

Wear, with short tears, at the ends of the spine, and lacking a small paper strip (1/4") along the spine near the gutter of the front cover. Very good. An "hors commerce" copy of the first French edition -- Traduit de l'anglais par M. Le Corbellier. Préface de Edmond Jaloux. The justification leaf states: Ouvrage tiré à 2.750 exemplaires numérotés, dont 100 hors commerces numérotés de 2.568 a 2.667 et marqués H.C. This copy is numbered 2.627 and is, indeed, marked "H.C." both on that leaf, and on the spine. First edition of the admired Le Corbellier translation (which is still the standard version of James' "Turn of the Screw" in French).

Publisher's olive-brown smooth ("sateen") cloth, lettered in gilt, top edges gilt. The spine is slightly soiled and darkened towards the bottom, There are faint marks along the fore-edge of both boards, and there is a half inch long chip missing from the bottom edge of the cloth of the front board. There is an ownership signature in ink, and the front inner hinge is cracking. Still -- a decent and pleasant copy of this fragile book. First American edition -- BAL 10679; Edel & Laurence A72a.
