Thomas Law Book Co. 1911 First American Edition Hardcover Very Good 8vo; xlviii & 524 pages; With Explanations of the Legal Terms used in the Plays, Poems and Sonnets and a Consideration of the Criminal Types Presented. Also a Full Discussion of the Bacon-Shakespeare Controversy. Publisher's maroon cloth, covers with edges ruled in blind, spine has title and author lettered in gilt and decorative bands of blind-rules. An attractive copy, with hinges tight and not cracked, very light rubbing to spine ends and corner tips, spine gilt lettering somewhat dulled, and one tiny ding to the fore-edge of the upper cover. Small bookplate, no other marks. Second edition, first published in 1911. A substantial work, gathering nearly all of the references to the law, courts, crime and punishment in Shakespeare with commentary and explanation of terms, precidents, and Shakespeare's sources in the law of his time. This second edition, published two years after the first, has added "a Full Discussion of the Bacon-Shakes peare Controversy" -- with a brief history of the literature of the Bacon advocates. White is calmly dismissive of the cyphers "discovered" by Delia Bacon and her successors and concludes that Shakespeare himself is the author of the Shakespeare plays. Price: 49.95 USD
