1 pages; A steel engraved portrait of James Brown extracted from Cushing's History of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, Including its Early Settlement... also Portraits of Some of its Prominent Men. Chicago: A. Warner & Co., 1889. The portrait measures 10" by 7" with the image and facsimile autograph centered; protective tissue guard in place. Front and image are clean and nice, back has some soiling and a red mark. Engraved by A. H. Ritchie. James Brown (1780-1874) immigrated to America from Ireland. He moved with his employer from Brooklyn to Pittsburgh where they established a confectionery business. When his brother joined him, they established a dry goods business which was very successful. In addition he partnered with James Varner in brewing ale for 50 years. Brown was one of the incorporators of the Bank of Pittsburgh and was a large investor in real estate.
