Thomas Doremus Messler (1833-1893) of Pittsburgh, PA was born in New Jersey and initially worked for a family firm Soon he accepted a position with the New York and Erie Railroad Company in the office of the company's auditor. Thus began his stellar career as a railroader, whose specialty was accounting, developing what became known as the "Messler System." By 1876 he was promoted to Vice President of the Pennsylvania Company, as well as serving as comptroller of that company, the Fort Wayne, the Pan Handle, and the Indianapolis & Vincennes. Messler was the vice president and comptroller of the Pennsylvania Company’s Pittsburgh, Cincinnati & Saint Louis Railroad, and the Saint Louis & Pennsylvania Railroad Company. He was also President of the New Brighton and New Castle Railroad Company.
