Chicago: A. Warner & Co., 1889. The portrait measures 10" by 7" with the image and facsimile autograph centered; protective tissue guard in place. Engraved by Samuel Sartain. Capt. Abraham Hays was born in 1809 near the Monongahela River. In early adulthood, he and his brother-in-law were millwrights in the town of Mifflin, Pennsylvania, but shortly after marriage he moved to Pittsburgh and formed a partnership with his brother in the manufacture of flax-seed oil. After a brief foray into farming, he eventually engaged in steamboating with some success. He died in 1887.
