Herron extracted from Cushing's History of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, Including its Early Settlement... also Portraits of Some of its Prominent Men. Chicago: A. Warner & Co., 1889. The portrait measures 10" by 7" with the image and facsimile autograph centered; protective tissue guard in place. William A. Herron was born in 1821 in Pittsburgh and attended Western University. After some time i the dry-goods business he joined his father's coal business. In 1846 he and his father joined with W. H. Brown in establishing the firm of Herron, Brown and Co. which engaged in floating coal in flatboats to Cincinnati, Louisville, Cairo and New Orleans. They also supplied the iron and gas works in Pittsburgh. At some point he shifted his attention to lumber, cotton batting and glass businesses, though he still owned a large interest in the coal business. In 1863 he was one of the organizers of the People's Savings Bank.
