Clarke extracted from Cushing's History of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, Including its Early Settlement... also Portraits of Some of its Prominent Men. Chicago: A. Warner & Co., 1889. The portrait measures 10" by 7" with the image and facsimile autograph centered; protective tissue guard in place. Thomas Shields Clarke was born at Cannonsburg, PA in 1801. His grandfather came from County Antrim, Ireland and came to America in 1771 settling on a farm on Brandywine Creek near Chadsford. Thomas S. Clarke finished his education at Jefferson College in Canonsburg and later went to Wheeling, VA, where he worked in the forwarding house of Knox & McKee. In 1825 he came to Pittsburgh and opened McKee, Clarke & Co. In 1842 he formed the firm of Clarke & Thaw & established the Pennsylvania & Ohio line of canal boats and cars. The business was quite profitable until the canal trade was supplanted by the rairoads.
