This is on much thinner yellow paper stock; on the verso of this text is a full-page b/w reproduction of a drawing. This scarce catalogue concludes with another full-page b/w plate, a full page b/w photograph of the artist in halftones, two smaller illustrations, and a short biography in English about Asger Jorn [1914-1973] -- mentioning his involvement with COBRA group, the International Movement for a Bauhaus Imaginist, and the Situationiste Internationale. This uncredited text is most likely the work of the noted critic and curator Lawrence Alloway. From 1955 to 1960 Alloway was Assistant Director of the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London. He moved to New York with his wife, realist painter Sylvia Sleigh in the early 1960's. Alloway was appointed senior curator at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum from 1961 until 1966. He chaired the jury awarding the 1964 Guggenheim Awards, which included a significant cash prize. It was announced that Asger Jorn had been selected for that year's award. One day after receiving the news of his selection, Jorn sent the following telegram to Harry F. Guggenheim: "GO TO HELL BASTARD—STOP—REFUSE PRIZE—STOP—NEVER ASKED FOR IT—STOP—AGAINST ALL DECENCY MIX ARTIST AGAINST HIS WILL IN YOUR PUBLICITY—STOP—I WANT PUBLIC CONFIRMATION NOT TO HAVE PARTICIPATED IN YOUR RIDICULOUS GAME." Laid in is a legal sized sheet, with a typewritten text (reproduced by mimeography) giving an English translation of René Bertelé's French introduction. This catalogue appears to have been issued to accompany Asger Jorn's first exhibition in England. See OCLC: 78205735 [four locations: Frick Museum; MOMA; Northwestern Univ; Courtauld Institute]. This copy conforms to all these copies in OCLC, in self-wrappers. [We have owned another copy of this rare catalogue with an original Jorn lithograph stapled over the self wrappers. Although unmarked as such, this copy belonged to Stefan P. Munsing [1915-1994] worked in New York City as a designer for Hans Knoll, Norman Bel Geddes and RCA. Munsing served in the Army in World War II, then as Chief of the Monuments, Fine-Arts & Archives Section in Munich. The MFAA was an Army unit locating stolen artworks which had disappeared into the huge Nazi hoards during the war. [Readers of this listing may have seen George Cluny's movie: "Monument Men".] Munsing later joined the U.S. Department of State during the later 1940's and '50's, where he established the State Department's Amerika Haus programs in Munich and Berlin and organized exhibitions and cultural programs in Germany and Austria. In 1955, he was named cultural officer at the American Embassy in London, where he staged exhibitions of such New York artists as Philip Pavia, Paul Jenkins and Ben Shahn and became an important force in the London art world. (Oddly, the Institute of Contemporary Arts name is slightly misspelled on the title page, and someone has had to supply the final letter "t" in the address: "17-18 Dover Stree"t" -- in manuscript. All signs of a publication which was almost designed to have few, rare, survivors, nearly sixty years after publication.
