Clean and tight in early 19th century binding of quarter green calf over marbled boards with gilt lettering and decorative stamping at spine, rubbed at extremities. Nice paper, no foxing. Pietro Giannone (7 May 1676 – 17 March 1748) was an Italian historian born in Ischitella, in the province of Capitanata. He opposed the papal influence in Naples, for which he was imprisoned for twelve years until his death. This volume contains his greatest work L'Apologia della Storia Civile di Napoli. In his account of the rise and progress of the Neapolitan laws and government, he warmly espoused the side of the civil power in its conflicts with the Roman Catholic hierarchy. ; Experience the pleasure of reading and appreciating this actual printed item. It has its own physical history that imbues it with a character lacking in ephemeral electronic renderings.
