278 pages; Clean and tight in early 20th century binding of brown half calf over blue cloth covered boards. Five raised bands at spine, gilt lettering, gilt bordered compartments at spine. On first blank, previous owner has fashioned a unique "bookplate" -- nicely penned "Border land / July 4th 1910" with an ink drawing of an open book, writing paper and a pen, and a paper. Quite a charming and well executed mark of ownership. If anyone knows who might have used this sort of mark, please let me know. This collection of essays by Robert Louis Stevenson, published in 1881, are light-hearted meditations on everyday life. Modeled on essays by William Hazlitt and Charles Lamb, Stevenson tells personal anecdotes and reveals applicable morals.
