155 pages; Publisher's light brown stiff wrappers, printed in brown. Slightly shaken in wrappers, some light soiling to wrapper, and a faint owner's signature. There is a repair to a portion of the bottom end of the spine. The original publisher's wrappers were designed in keeping with Whistler's own distinctive ideas of book design, including a vignette of his famous butterfly emblem-signature. Théodore Duret was a critic and journalist, who played an important role in the career of the Impressionsts, and was particularly friendly to Whistler. Duret's biography was first published in 1904. This edition, published just before the first World War, has 26 hors-texte plates (one of which is a reproduction of Whistler's well known full length portrait of Duret in evening attire, now in the Metropolitan Museum in NYC). The color plate reproduces an aquarelle portrait of Nelly Finch. ; Experience the pleasure of reading and appreciating this actual printed item. It has its own physical history that imbues it with a character lacking in ephemeral electronic renderings.
