Title as printed on the spine: Dr. Bennett's Married Life: caution to Husbands and Wives. OCLC: 40267176 This is the history of a very famous and very nasty divorce case in 19th century New Haven, CT. Mrs. Bennett accused her husband of all sorts of cruelties and wrong-doings, knitting a complex web of stories throughout the fabric of their social network which undermined his relationships with their friends, acquaintances and relatives. A neighbor Mr. Edson Sanford, though once under the sway of Mrs. Bennett's complaints, was eventually convinced that Mrs. Bennett was plotting and conniving to win suit against her husband. Sanford began to seek out the actual facts of the case and eventually testified on behalf of Dr. Bennett. Contrary to the picture Mrs. Bennett painted of her husband, evidence revealed a number of improprities on the part of Mrs. Bennett who received offers of marriage from her admirers should she succeed in divorcing the Doctor. She did succeed in winning the case, but was pilloried in later publications. A very sad tale indeed. This account proffering the defense of Dr. Bennett was published by him with an eye to earning money to pay the decreed alimony and additional financial support to his wife and children and to attempt to rehabilitate his reputation. ; Experience the pleasure of reading and appreciating this actual printed item. It has its own physical history that imbues it with a character lacking in ephemeral electronic renderings.
