from Picturesque America; Wood Engraving; 1 pages; A beautifully hand-colored engraving from Picturesque America by William Cullen Bryant. Image measures 6 3/4" x 7" (14" x 11" matted). Two men with long oars are manning a long boat laden with cargo at the center of the River; navigating the difficulties presented by the rock strewn Falls. Matted in white stock with clear mylar. From the text: "The river, half a mile or more in width, foams and dashes over the ledges formed by the peculiar stratification... with great but not unmusical violence in some places; while in others it slides between huge rocks with a swift, treacherous look... Boats equipped with oars at both ends shoot these dangerous rapids, guided with consummate skill by the boatmen, who are generally negroes."
