Daughters of land-owning Protestant families in the South West of Ireland in the mid-nineteenth century, the cousins Edith Ĺ’none Somerville and Violet Martin (Martin Ross), wrote novels and short stories which displayed wonderful skills of observation and humour in detailing the social and political conditions in Ireland during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, including the Irish R.M. tales, the novel The Real Charlotte, and many more. Even after Ross's death in 1915, Somerville continued to credit her inpublications, claiming they continued their collaboration via spiritual communication and automatic writing. This account of Edith Somerville's experiences on a visit to the United States is one of the few that she published without referencing Martin Ross as a co-author. Somerville was a devoted sportswoman and became master of the West Carbery Foxhounds in 1903. In this account of her initial visit to the southern states, New England and New York City, Somerville notes many similarities between the Irish big house and the American southern plantation, e.g., riding to the hounds, architecture, landscaping and the manners of servants in the homes she visits. Somerville was also active in the suffragist movement. ; Signed by Author
