Bundling was a sort of practice run at marital compatibility under the family roof; couples were each wound up in cloth or sacks then shared a bed with a bundling board keeping them apart. The tradition originated either in the Netherlands or in the British Isles and later became common in colonial United States, especially in Pennsylvania Dutch Country. In courtship, it allows intimacy without intercourse.
